Sleazy Georgia Republicans Are Trying To Block Voters From Voting In The House Runoff Election

Georgia Republicans are so afraid that they are going to lose to Jon Ossoff in June that they are trying to suppress the Democratic vote by not allowing newly registered voters to vote in the runoff.

HuffPo reported, “On Thursday, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law filed a complaint in the federal district court in Atlanta, arguing that the state is violating the National Voter Registration Act. That law sets 30 days before a federal election as the earliest permissible deadline for voter registration. Georgia complied with the provision for the special congressional election held this past Tuesday. But because no candidate won 50 percent of the vote, there will be a second election on June 20 ― a runoff between the top two finishers, Democrat Jon Ossoff and Republican Karen Handel. Georgia election officials contend that the June runoff is simply a continuation of the special election this week, so they don’t have to allow newly registered voters to participate. The registration deadline for Tuesday’s election was March 20, and officials say anybody who registers after that day is not eligible to vote in the June runoff.”

Republican Georgia election officials are trying to ignore the state’s own election and substitute a newly made up interpretation to keep people who are registering to vote for John Ossoff from voting in June.

Republicans have a lousy candidate in Karen Handel. They have no voter enthusiasm, and Democrats have all the momentum, so of course, Republicans are going to try to suppress the vote. It is revealing that the GOP has to resort to these measures in a district that has not gone Democratic since 1979. It has been a solidly Republican House seat for nearly 40 years, but the tide has turned to such a degree against the Republican Party, that they are trying to rig a game that they should have already won.

If Republicans are forced to cheat in a red district, it is sure proof that a Democratic wave is building for 2018.
