Donald Trump is so worried about Tuesday’s special election in Georgia’s 6th district that he rushed to the phones on Monday to record a robocall attacking Democratic underdog Jon Ossoff.
The president inserted himself in the race just so he could lie about the surging Democrat’s positions and label him as a “yes man” to Nancy Pelosi.
“Liberal democrats from outside of Georgia are spending millions and millions of dollars trying to take your Republican congressional seat away from you,” Trump says on the call, according to The Hill. “Don’t let them do it.”
Instead of making a positive argument in favor of any single Republican candidate on the ticket, Trump decided to do what he does more than anything – wage attacks on and spew lies about his political opponents.
Trump said, “If you don’t vote tomorrow, Ossoff will raise your taxes, destroy your healthcare, and flood our country with illegal immigrants.”
All of it’s false, yes, but the lies indicate that Trump is getting worried about a congressional race in yet another reliably Republican district as Ossoff’s support in the polls continues to creep closer to the 50 percent mark he needs to avoid taking the race to a much more GOP-friendly run-off contest in June.
According to a recent Landmark poll, Ossoff’s support is just over 45 percent, not far from the 50 percent required to avoid a head-to-head match-up over the summer.
Once again, it’s still unclear – maybe even unlikely – that Ossoff will reach the 50 percent threshold in a GOP-friendly district on Tuesday, but the fact that he’s this close and Trump is devoting his time to the contest suggests that Republicans are worried.
Between tomorrow night’s contest and a potential run-off election in June, Republicans may squeak by with another special election win, but the closeness of the races in GOP territory suggests that 2018 will be a difficult year for Republicans.
