Trump Just Broke A Major Campaign Promise And Opened The Door For Democrats To Win Congress

As a candidate, Trump campaigned on getting tough with China, but as president, Trump has decided not to get tough with China, and his flip-flop has opened the door for Democrats in congressional races in states like Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Trump announced that he had changed his mind on China:

Mr. Trump said the reason he has changed his mind on one of his signature campaign promises is that China hasn’t been manipulating its currency for months and because taking the step now could jeopardize his talks with Beijing on confronting the threat of North Korea.

“They’re not currency manipulators,” Mr. Trump said.

Trump lied to those blue-collar voters who supported him in Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Trump made fighting China and protecting American jobs a staple talking point at his rallies, but less than 100 days into his first term, Trump has gone back on his promise to be tough on China.

Regarding the 2018 election, Trump’s flip-flop opens the door for Democrats to make an appeal to these voters. Donald Trump has demonstrated that he is not on the side of American workers. When push came to shove, Trump didn’t get tough. He bowed down to his Chinese creditors.

Democrats already have momentum on their side, but when Trump broke his campaign promise on China, he also gifted Democratic candidates with a powerful argument that can help them take back Congress in 2018.
