House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) made a colossal mistake while trying to defend Trump on the Russia scandal that could cost Republicans the House in 2018.
Video:
Nunes was asked if there was any evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.
He answered, “I’ll give you a very simple answer. No. Up to speed on everything I have up to this morning. No evidence of collusion.”
Chairman Nunes tried to blame Obama for the Trump/Russia scandal. When asked by Chris Wallace if elements are trying to undercut the Trump presidency. Nunes answered, “I think that’s pretty clear. It’s pretty clear that’s happening. There’s even been stories written about it in numerous newspapers talking about how they said they left breadcrumbs around to hurt the Trump administration.”
The hearings haven’t begun yet. No witnesses have testified, but the Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee is claiming that there is no evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.
Rep. Nunes was a Trump campaign official, so of course, he is going to say that there is no evidence of collusion. Just like Rep. Trey Gowdy, and Rep. Darrell Issa before him, Nunes is continuing the modern tradition of Republican committee chairs which go into investigations with their minds made up.
The problem for Republicans is that Devin Nunes is risking the House majority to protect Donald Trump. If Nunes is wrong if evidence does surface that Trump and Russia colluded, his defense of the president connects the House Republicans to the scandal.
Chairman Nunes’s statements in defense of Trump have made the Republican House majority a part of the scandal.
If it is proven that Trump and Russia worked together to win the election, Democrats will be in a position to use the Russia scandal as an issue in House races.
For this reason, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-CA) just opened the door to Democrats taking back the House in 2018.
