Republicans have spent seven-plus years criticizing Obamacare, but according to a new poll, President Obama keeps winning as respondents preferred Obamacare to Trumpcare 49%-29%.
The PPP poll on the GOP health care plan found, “The Affordable Care Act continues to post some of the best numbers it’s ever seen, with 47% of voters in favor of it to 39% who are opposed. When voters are asked whether they’d have rather have the Affordable Care Act or the American Health Care Act in place, the Affordable Care Act wins by 20 points at 49/29. Just 32% of voters think the best path forward with the Affordable Care Act is to repeal it and start over, while 63% think it would be better to keep what works in it and fix what doesn’t.”
There is only hardcore Republican support for the American Health Care Act (Trumpcare). Just 24% of Americans and 37% of Republicans support the GOP bill. 49% of Americans are opposed to the GOP bill. Twenty-two percent of Republicans are opposed, and 41% aren’t sure.
Despite being out of office, President Obama’s legacy to humiliate Republicans on the issue of health care. After the release of the CBO numbers showing that 24 million people are going to lose their healthcare over the next decade, I would suspect that support for the Republican bill will continue to decline.
At the time, President Obama and Democrats were criticized for not explaining and selling the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) well enough to the American people, but Obama and the Democrats look like geniuses compared to the way that Paul Ryan and Donald Trump have botched the Trumpcare roll out.
The Trump presidency may go down as one of the most negative in American history. The Trump administration has a negative concept of presidential power that has not been seen before in modern US politics. Trump is focused on undoing the accomplishments of the previous administration while his policy proposals are focused on defensive positions like building walls and keeping jobs in the United States.
Republicans spent trying to trash and destroy Obamacare, but the popularity of President Obama’s centerpiece legislation demonstrates that presidents who build achievements by positively using their power can continue to defeat their opponents even after they have left 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
