Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) went straight to the heart of the matter, and the Oval Office, by calling on Jeff Sessions to immediately resign so that the American people can find about what Trump knew about his campaign’s contacts with Russia.
In a statement provided to PoliticusUSA, Sen. Sanders said:
Millions of Americans are deeply concerned about the possibility that the Trump administration colluded with President Putin and the Russian authoritarian government to win the presidential election. It is deeply disturbing that then-Sen. Jeff Sessions, under oath at a Senate confirmation hearing, falsely denied having met with the Russian ambassador.
We need a Justice Department that will give us the facts about Russia’s involvement in the 2016 election and their ties to the Trump campaign, not one led by someone who deliberately misled Congress about his own communications with the Russian government. We also must find out what President Trump knew about meetings involving his campaign and the Russians.
Attorney General Sessions should resign and a special prosecutor should be appointed to give the American people credible answers about Russia’s involvement in the U.S. election.
Jeff Sessions isn’t the heart of the scandal. Attorney General Sessions was a firewall put in place by President Trump at the Department of Justice to hide the truth from the American people. To uncover the truth, Sessions has got to go.
Some members of Congress are getting hung up on whether Sessions should recuse himself or resign, but the bigger question, as Sen. Sanders pointed out is what did Trump know and when did he know it?
It will be impossible for the American people to get the answers that they need while Jeff Sessions is leading the Justice Department.
Ignore the Republican noise about Jeff Sessions, the real focus of attention should be The President Of The United States.
