Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi was, as usual, the first to call it. Pelosi called for Sessions to resign, saying he is not fit to serve as the top law enforcement officer of our country.
After the stunning news that Trump’s Attorney General Jeff Sessions lied under oath about his contact with Russian officials while he was a member of the Trump transition team, MoveOn called his resignation.
But the first domino really fell when former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi called for Sessions to resign. “Jeff Sessions lied under oath during his confirmation hearing before the Senate. Under penalty of perjury, he told the Senate Judiciary Committee, ‘I have been called a surrogate at a time or two in that campaign and I did not have communications with the Russians.’ We now know that statement is false,” Pelosi wrote in her statement.
“Attorney General Sessions has never had the credibility to oversee the FBI investigation of senior Trump officials’ ties to the Russians. That is why Democrats have consistently called for Sessions to recuse himself from any oversight of the investigation.
“Now, after lying under oath to Congress about his own communications with the Russians, the Attorney General must resign,” the top Democrat demanded. “Sessions is not fit to serve as the top law enforcement officer of our country and must resign. There must be an independent, bipartisan, outside commission to investigate the Trump political, personal and financial connections to the Russians.”
Jason Easley pointed out tonight that Sessions is under federal investigation, “After The Washington Post reported that Sessions at multiple meetings with representatives from Moscow while a member of the Trump campaign, and then lied about it under oath during his confirmation hearing to Attorney General, The Wall Street Journal followed up by reporting that Sessions is under federal investigation.”
The Russian smoke surrounding President Donald Trump from all corners of his closest allies suggests that he knows more than he’s saying about why multiple members of Team Trump were talking to Russia during the U.S. election. It’s not likely that so many of Trump’s entourage were talking to Russia without Trump’s knowledge, or indeed direction.
Trump didn’t need to speak with Russia to collude with them on the hacking of the Democratic emails. He publicly directed the Kremlin to hack Hillary Clinton, which was obviously not possible, and so it appears they offered up the next best thing- the DNC.
Jeff Sessions is supposed to uphold the law. But it appears he lied under oath, about something so huge that appears to have undermined the country for which he works. He certainly isn’t fit for the job of top prosecutor.
As a reminder, Jeff Sessions was unwilling to recuse himself from investigating himself and President Trump — and as we can see now, for good reason.
