The House Republican Obamacare replacement plan has been leaked and it as bad as expected. The Republican plan would kill subsidies and Medicaid expansion. It would allow states to create high-risk pools with benefit caps and would cause millions of Americans to lose their health care. The Republican plan is a death sentence for millions of Americans who benefit from the ACA.
The full draft of the bill can be read here, but it basically what Speaker of the House Paul Ryan promised it would be when he said during a CNN town hall, “We, obviously, want to have a system where they can get affordable coverage without going bankrupt because they get sick. But, we can do that without destroying the rest of the healthcare system for everybody else. That’s the point I’m trying to make. What we should have done was fix what was broken in health care without breaking what was working in healthcare, and that’s what, unfortunately, Obamacare did. So, by financing state high-risk pools to guarantee people get affordable coverage when they have a pre-existing condition, like yourself, what you’re doing is, you’re dramatically lowering the price of insurance for everybody else.”
The Republican replacement keeps costs low by giving sick people less health insurance. What is going to happen to people who have cancer and other illnesses when their coverage is capped is that many of these individuals will not be able to afford life-saving health care, and they will die.
The fact that more people are going to be left without coverage, or they will have coverage that doesn’t pay for much is going to devastate the health care sector of the economy.
The Republican plan is not going to give people a subsidy to help individuals pay for health insurance. Instead, people will have to pay for their health insurance, and then receive a yearly tax credit of $2,000-$4,000. The legislation would allow age discrimination in health insurance by permitting insurance companies to charge older people up to five times more than younger people.
People will still be required to have health care. If an individual’s coverage lapses, they will have to pay a thirty percent penalty when they resume their coverage.
The GOP plan will be a death sentence for thousands of Americans each year, and it is a reminder of why the American people must treat the battle over health care like it is a life and death struggle.
