Bombshell CBO Reports Finds 18 Million To Lose Health Care In Year 1 Of Obamacare Repeal

A new report from the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office blew apart the Republican falsehoods on Obamacare repeal by finding that 18 million people will lose their health insurance in the first year of repeal, and health insurance premiums will double for those who still have insurance.

The CBO report contained two big findings that were devastating to the pro-repeal argument:

– The number of people who are uninsured would increase by 18 million in the first new plan year following enactment of the bill. Later, after the elimination of the ACA’s expansion of Medicaid eligibility and of subsidies for insurance purchased through the ACA marketplaces, that number would increase to 27 million, and then to 32 million in 2026.

– Premiums in the nongroup market (for individual policies purchased through the marketplaces or directly from insurers) would increase by 20 percent to 25 percent—relative to projections under current law—in the first new plan year following enactment. The increase would reach about 50 percent in the year following the elimination of the Medicaid expansion and the marketplace subsidies, and premiums would about double by 2026.

The report found that ten million people who get their coverage through the exchanges will lose their insurance in the first year. Five million people who are covered by the Medicaid expansion and three million people who have private insurance through their employer will also lose their coverage.

It turns out that everything Republicans have been saying about how no one will be harmed by ACA repeal is a lie. Tens of millions of people going to be immediately harmed. The Republican replacement ideas will leave millions of people without coverage, and those who have coverage will pay higher premiums and get less insurance.

The doubling of premiums means that fewer people will be able to afford insurance, which will also increase the number of uninsured.

Senate Democratic Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) reacted to the report with a version of numbers don’t lie, “Nonpartisan statistics don’t lie: it’s crystal clear that the Republican effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act will increase health care costs for millions of Americans and kick millions more off of their health insurance. The numbers are even worse than experts could have imagined: tens of millions will lose their health insurance, and individuals will see their premiums double. This is exactly why Republican members of Congress are getting an earful back home from constituents who want them to turn back from their dangerous plan to make America sick again.”

The increase in the uninsured will wreck the health care industry, as 3 million Americans who are employed in the health care field are expected to lose their jobs in the four years after ACA repeal.

Many Americans will die because of a decision that is based solely on ideology and partisan politics.

Obamacare repeal is the ultimate act of putting people last, and it will have immeasurable consequences for the health of tens of millions of Americans.
