Meryl Street tore into Donald Trump last night at the Golden Globes. She spoke truth to power. Donald Trump reacted predictably, running to his smartphone to tweet attacks on the eight-time Golden Globe-winning actress, calling her ” one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood.”
For the 100th time, here is Donald Trump mocking a disabled reporter:
You might remember just the other day Trump, who has never won an Emmy for Apprentice, claimed to be a “ratings machine” but a quick glance at Streep’s achievements via Wikipedia leave one in no doubt who is the true ratings machine:
Streep has also received 30 Golden Globe nominations, winning eight—more nominations, and more competitive (non-honorary) wins than any other actor (male or female).[5] Her work has also earned her two Screen Actors Guild Awards, a Cannes Film Festival award, five New York Film Critics Circle Awards, two BAFTA awards, two Australian Film Institute awards, five Grammy Award nominations, and five Drama Desk Award nominations, among several others. She was awarded the AFI Life Achievement Award in 2004, the Gala Tribute from the Film Society of Lincoln Center in 2008, and the Kennedy Center Honor in 2011 for her contribution to American culture through performing arts. President Barack Obama awarded her the 2010 National Medal of Arts and in 2014 the Presidential Medal of Freedom.[6][7] In 2003, the government of France made her a Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters.[8] On November 3, 2016, Streep was selected as the recipient of the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 74th Golden Globe Awards.[9]
You probably remember President Barack Obama calmly taking all the abuse heaped on him for eight years, saying nothing at all in response but just letting it slide off him with class and dignity. He even joked about it, drawing laughter and applause. Donald Trump is not that man. Donald Trump is a thin-skinned crybaby with monumental insecurities.
Rather than accepting that Meryl Streep has a right to her opinion, and to express that opinion, Donald Trump chose to attack her, and not by attempting to refute her words, but by attacking her as an “overrated” actress – a woman who was there to accept the The Cecil B. DeMille Award, which is an honorary award given by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.”
This is Trump’s stock answer, as we have seen again and again, to say people who criticize him are overrated and organizations are “failing.” However, Trump doesn’t ever bother to consider the facts when he publicizes his knee-jerk reactions via Twitter.
Calling Streep overrated is like calling an NFL Hall-of-Famer overrated. Her lifetime body of work is beyond dispute. As they say in sports, she “left it all on the field.” Trump has never left any of himself anywhere, though he’ll happily leave others, because he cares only about himself.
Like her films or not, Meryl Streep has to her credit a series of accomplishments second to none and has inspired millions. Who has Donald Trump inspired besides Donald Trump and his small-minded followers who get off on sowing hate, something they immediately proceeded to do last night as soon as the words had left Streep’s mouth.
As Joy Reid tweeted, “The angry right wing tweets on the #GoldenGlobes are telling. It’s all that they hate but they’re still pressed against the glass, watching.”
