Democratic Opposition to Trump Already Shows Signs of Fracturing

For a significant segment of the population, 2016 will go down as a very bad year. There has been some good news, but it always comes from the lone Democrat with authority to prevent a totally bad year from becoming much, much worse. It was, quite frankly, hilarious to hear Democrats claim that when Donald Trump enters the White House he will face powerful opposition that no other president has experienced. No matter how much anyone wanted that “fierce opposition” to be true, it was historically unlikely and yet it was worth waiting to see just how oppositional Democrats in Congress would be towards Trump.

For the second time in a week, it is glaringly apparent that the leading Democrat in the Senate, Charles Schumer, is embracing Donald Trump like a long lost Democratic lover. Of course Schumer, a senator representing Israel, harshly criticized and condemned fellow Democrat and President Barack Obama for not ardently supporting Israel’s illegal aggression against Palestinians because it is precisely what one expects of a politician representing Israel. But when Schumer embraced Trump’s remarkably transparent infrastructure improvement scam, he revealed what many already knew was on the horizon; a fracturing in the so-called Democratic “opposition” to Trump’s agenda. That fracturing just came quicker than expected and before the Trump is in the White House.

It was reported in Politico late, last week that the incoming Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said he is embracing Trump’s proposed $1 trillion infrastructure scam. As noted in Talking Points Memo, Mr. Schumer “might be more aligned with Trump on the infrastructure plan than Republicans.” Republicans initially are warning against spending any money on helping Americans, but when they comprehend that the Trump scam is a monumental gift to corporations and the filthy rich, including giving them “ownership” of America’s infrastructure, they will be rushing to join Schumer’s “bear hug” embrace of the Trump’s infrastructure scam.

Obviously, Mr. Schumer likes the idea of spending a trillion dollars on America’s infrastructure; all Democrats would if it was a valid plan. He also probably believes all of the Trump hype that his “fabulous” plan is a winner for everyone involved. However, dreadful Don doesn’t do anything that allows everyone to win, because his only regard is for his and his wealthy cabal’s profit and pecuniary enrichment.

It is curious that Schumer intimated he didn’t know much about Trump’s plan when there has been a wealth of assessment provided by real economists and people in the know. However, Schumer should also be well aware that the concept of everyone winning or benefitting from a Trump proposal is the farthest thing from dirty Don’s “infrastructure plan.” There is a good reason for the preponderance of complaints and criticism over the Trump infrastructure plan Schumer is already embracing; it is just a mammoth tax scam to benefit the rich at the expense of the taxpayers who aren’t the rich.

Trump’s plan is so much more than just tax breaks for the rich, though, and one wonders why Schumer would even feign to “like” a plan that gives the rich more tax breaks. It can’t be just to cause division between the Trump and congressional Republicans who warn they will reject the plan out of hand due to the alleged “cost.” Surely Schumer took the time to consider what real economist Paul Krugman said the plan entailed before embracing it with a bear hug.

The Nobel laureate in economics said besides monumental tax breaks for the rich, Trump’s plan is a gift of ownership of America’s infrastructure to corporations in the ultimate privatization scam; and it is all at taxpayer expense. And, it is “the ultimate privatization scam” that the incoming Senate Minority Leader, a Democrat, is embracing it with a “big bear hug” and it should give all Democrats pause.

It is the second time in a week that Charles Schumer has aligned himself with dirty Don and it should be a portent that the so-called solid Democratic opposition to Trump’s agenda is beginning to crack before either the opposition or agenda officially begins. For many Americans, it was nauseating to see the high-ranking Democrat Schumer join with Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu to harshly condemn the sitting Democratic President over his rejection of Israel’s aggression, but embracing a Trump proposal benefitting no-one but the rich is sickening.

It remains to be seen exactly how the Republicans in Congress align with Schumer and Trump on an infrastructure scam, but it is safe to say that when Republicans realize the scam gives the rich monumental tax breaks and complete private ownership of America’s infrastructure, they too will embrace Trump’s scam with a bear hug. More importantly, it remains to be seen how many other Democrats jump on the Trump train and if history is any indication, there will be more than enough of them to put an abrupt end to whatever “fierce opposition” a couple of Democrats had planned for Trump.
