In an interview with Al Jazeera’s Mehdi Hasan, Noam Chomsky called Donald Trump the “greater evil” and warned that “The most predictable aspect of Trump is unpredictability. I think it’s dangerous, very dangerous.”
Watch courtesy of Al Jazeera:
“He certainly is off the spectrum. There’s never been anything like him,” Chomsky told Hasan.
He added that,
“He has no background at all in any political activities. Never held office, been interested in office. He has no known political positions. He’s basically a showman.”
There was much discussion during the past campaign over a choice of greater and lesser evils, and Chomsky is very clear whom he saw as the “greater evil”:
“There are two issues. One is kind of a moral issue. Do you vote against the greater evil if you don’t happen to like the other candidate? The answer to that is yes, if you have any moral understanding, if you want to keep the greater evil out.
“I didn’t like Clinton at all, but her positions are much better than Trump’s on every issue I can think of.”
He said that yes, Trump could shake up the system, but “He’ll shake up the system in bad ways.”
Chomsky, who had endorsed Bernie Sanders and then switched to Clinton when she won the nomination, explained,
“If Clinton had won – she had some progressive programs. The left could have been organized to keeping her feet to the fire and pushing them through. What it will be doing now is protecting rights that have already been achieved from being destroyed. That’s completely regressive.”
Chomsky is right. No good can come from a Trump win. Any changes will be changes for the worse and far from advancing our rights we will be struggling to maintain those we still have. That much Donald Trump and his allies have made clear.
