Once he leaves office, Barack Obama will be the one Democrat capable of leading the party, and during his press conference in Peru, the President strongly suggested that he is not about to go quietly into retirement and allow his legacy to be dismantled by Trump and the GOP.

President Obama delivered a very interesting answer when he was asked if he will withhold public criticism of Trump. The President said, “Look, I’ve said before, President Bush could not have been more gracious to me when I came in. And my intention is to, certainly for the next two months, is finish my job. And then, after that, to take Michelle on vacation, get some rest, spend time with my girls, and do some writing, do some thinking. So I want to be respectful of the office and give the President-elect an opportunity to put forward his platform and his arguments without somebody popping off in every instance. As an American citizen who cares deeply about our country, if there are issues that have less to do with the specifics of some legislative proposal or battle, but go to core questions about our values and our ideals, and if I think that it’s necessary or helpful for me to defend those ideals, then I’ll examine it when it comes. But what I do know is, is that I have to take Michelle on vacation.”
Obama’s answer wasn’t a no.
His answer also was in line with other reporting that President plans on joining the Obama loyalist resistance to Trump once he leaves office. As was reported on Saturday, Obama sources say that the President has lots of ideas, but he doesn’t feel that now is the proper time to express them.
Obama is correct. The new administration deserves the space to govern, but if Obama feels that they have gone too far, he has a right as an American citizen to speak out.
The worst nightmare for the Republican Party will be an Obama who is no longer bound by the constraints of the presidency and can work to both lead the opposition and rebuild the Democratic Party.
Informal etiquette has always been that former presidents stay quiet when the new administration takes office. However, Trump has shattered the conventional political standards.
Donald Trump is not the norm, so no one should expect President Obama to sit back and stay quiet if his agenda harms or weakens the United States of America.
It is looking increasingly like Barack Obama is leaving office, but he isn’t going anywhere.
