Sarah Jones is right about Donald Trump’s role in proving the Republican Party’s sexism. She’s probably right to want to thank him. But I’m not ready to do that. I’m too angry because one of Trump’s victims has been victimized again – for speaking out. Rape culture has forced a woman and her family to leave the country.
Trump also showed us his sexism and that of his party isn’t just words. As Sarah Jones put it,
“Donald Trump’s overt misogyny and sexism draw attention to the motive and meaning of the Republican Party’s policies designed to control and punish women for their independence.”
From Paul Ryan’s bill that attempted to give a woman’s rapist more control over her body and life than a woman is allowed in many Republican controlled states to the Republican attempt to shove a transvaginal ultrasound wand between our legs for no reason other than to punish us, Republican policy has offended and outraged women.”
Since the Access Hollywood video came out, Republicans tried to distance their images from the confessions of a sexual predator, while maintaining support for him. If that doesn’t speak to the Republican Party’s sexism, I don’t know what does.
Rudy Guiliani tried to suggest that Trump was only speaking in the hypothetical in the Access Hollywood video. Jeff Sessions tried to suggest that touching a woman’s genitalia or kissing her without her consent isn’t sexual assault.
I don’t characterize that as sexual assault. I think that’s a stretch. I don’t know what he meant,” Sessions told the Weekly Standard in an interview Sunday night. The interviewer followed up by asking Sessions to clarify whether he thought grabbing a woman by the genitals — something Trump also described doing in the video — was sexual assault.
“I don’t know. It’s not clear that he — how that would occur,” Sessions said.
Both men are lawyers which removes any doubt that they were lying when denying what Trump admitted to was sexual assault.
Trump tried to deflect from the video with a stunt involving four women who were paid off to endorse Trump, while trying to suggest that Hillary Clinton really doesn’t care about victims of sexual predators. In reality, Trump was being just as predatory because the only value those women had was as his props, even if they were paid props.
During the past week women came forward with stories that many of us know because we lived them too. We also know the typical defense – is yet another display of the sexism that oozes from every pore of Trump’s orange skin.
In response to Natasha Stoynoff’s article about the time Trump allegedly attacked her, Trump trotted out the number one myth of rape culture.
Trump denies attacking Natasha Stoynoff because she isn’t attractive enough to assault.
Watch here:
At 1:20 in the video he says:
Take a look. You look at her. Look at her words. You tell me what you think. I don’t think so. I don’t think so.
Many things distinguish sex crimes from all others. These are the only crimes in which the victim is put on trial – in the courtroom and in the media. These are the only crimes that result in the victim receiving a life sentence of guilt, fear and mistrust. These are the only crimes where the victim is attacked for reporting the crime or not reporting it soon enough.
In Trump’s case, the attacks aren’t limited to the courtroom, the media or Trump himself. Trump’s followers join in the shaming and intimidation of anyone who speaks out against his questionable business practices, his political ideas or his sexual assault.
If we’re lucky, we learn to move on even if we never forget. We learn to realize that the shame doesn’t belong to us. It belongs to the sexual predators and the people and the political party who enable and defend them.
Yet, the consequences are born by the victim, as reflected in Mindy McGillivray’s experiences since she “came out from the shadows of shame that go with being the prey of a sexual predator. On Wednesday, the Palm Beach Post published a story that details McGillivray’s experience being groped by Donald Trump.
Two days later, McGillivray told the Palm Beach Post she’s leaving the United States because she fears for her family’s safety.
We feel the backlash of the Trump supporters. It scares us. It intimidates us. We are in fear of our lives.
Let that sink in for a moment.
This is what rape culture does. This is what the Republican presidential candidate does. This is what the Republican Party does in its continued assault on the person and dignity of women.
I’m relieved that Trump proved Democrats were right about the Republican Party’s sexism. I’ll save the thank you’s for Hillary Clinton when we hand Trump and his Republican Party a crushing defeat on November 8th.
