Trump Wonders Why Republicans Aren’t Doing Something About Non-Existent Voter Fraud

Last updated on July 17th, 2023 at 09:22 pm

Donald Trump is at it again this morning, inventing “facts” out of thin air as he whines about a rigged election . In contradiction of all evidence, Trump tweeted,

Of course, there is no large-scale voter fraud taking place and that hasn’t stopped Republican leaders from complaining about it anyway, and passing all sorts of voter suppression laws to keep all but white people from voting.

And as we have seen, Trump has a history of claiming the system is rigged any time he doesn’t get his way.

The only voter fraud taking place is in their own heads – and in Trump’s particularly – as a way of pre-excusing his defeat at his own hands and blaming it on somebody else.

A disgruntled Trump followed that tweet up with another, telling us how horrible President Obama has been, and how much worse Hillary Clinton will be:

Never mind the complete lack of evidence that Barack Obama has been a failure as president. On the contrary. The economy is back to pre-2008 levels. You know, back when Republicans used the policies Trump wants to bring back to crash the nation’s economy. But it’s what Trump’s howling racist and misogynist masses want to hear.

And voter fraud? That is as mythical as Trump’s respect for women.

As Snopes pointed out, in looking at the 2012 election, “A list of instances supposedly proving voter fraud in the 2012 U.S. presidential election only demonstrates that some people are really bad at math.”

Well…we all know about that math Republicans do when reality doesn’t correspond to their fantasies.

In 2014, U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman ruled against Wisconsin Republicans, saying,

The evidence at trial established that virtually no voter impersonation occurs in Wisconsin. The defendants could not point to a single instance of known voter impersonation occurring in Wisconsin at any time in the recent past…In the present case, no evidence suggests that voter-impersonation fraud will become a problem at any time in the foreseeable future.

In that same year, The New York Times reminded us that, “The New York Times reported in 2007, for instance, that a five-year investigation by the Bush administration “turned up virtually no evidence of any organized effort to skew federal elections.”

The Washington Post drove the point home just a few days ago, Christopher Ingraham writing in the Wonkblog, “7 papers, 4 government inquiries, 2 news investigations and 1 court ruling proving voter fraud is mostly a myth.”

That’s pretty conclusive. Voter fraud is so rare that effectively, it doesn’t exist. Donald Trump is losing. He’s headed for a landslide defeat at the hands of Hillary Clinton. He wants to blame it on voter fraud, because who wouldn’t vote for an anti-Semitic, racist, misogynist bigot?

Well, most everyone who isn’t a white supremacist, not to put too fine a point upon it. But Trump will never admit the fault is his own; that his message is toxic; and so it’s straight to the excuse making: the stab-in-the-back; the rigged election that “the system” – by which he has benefited so enormously – won’t let him win.

It’s a great excuse for a “movement” which has, to this day, not provided one single fact to support its hysterical claims: If nothing Trump says is true, it’s only fitting that something that doesn’t exist should keep him out of the Oval Office.
