A new Politico/Morning Consult poll shows that Trump’s claims that the election is rigged are convincing his supporters, and they also might be handing the election to Hillary Clinton.
According to the Politico/Morning Consult poll, 48% of Trump supporters are concerned about their votes not being counted accurately compared to 13% of Clinton supporters. Eighty-one percent of Trump supporters believe the election could be stolen from him due to widespread voter fraud. Seventy-two percent of Republicans believe that the media is biased towards Hillary Clinton, and 60% of Republicans believe that the polls are biased towards Hillary Clinton.
Politico and Morning Consult also showed the relationship between the sexual assault accusations against Trump and his support in the polls:
Here is a graph of fear that the votes won’t be counted accurately:
Overall, Clinton leads Trump 42%-36% in a poll which has been one of the more favorable for the Republican candidate in the past. Clinton’s six percent lead ties for her largest in the Politico/Morning Consult poll since September 8. The poll has a margin of error of three points, which means that Hillary Clinton’s lead could be as high as 9 or as low as 3, but either way, the Democratic candidate is winning.
Republican concern that votes won’t be counted correctly is wrong and misplaced. Votes are counted by localities and verified at the state level. Election officials are by law ordinary citizens who are made up of a list of Republicans and Democrats. Government officials are not counting the votes. Vote counting is done in public and is supervised by representatives of all campaigns. In other words, the allegation that votes won’t be counted properly is completely bogus, and just a preemptive Trump conspiracy to explain his likely defeat.
Trump’s election rigging claim has taken root with his supporters. It will be interesting to see if it continues to appear to backfire by killing Republican enthusiasm.
Donald Trump is creating a monster that is threatening the trust and belief in the legitimacy of US elections. He is also setting up an excuse that will allow him to stay in the public spotlight long after Election Day.
Even if the Republican nominee leads his party to a landslide defeat, it looks like Trump won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.
