Trump called his running mate and asked him to fill in for him on the campaign trail for the next 48 hours. Mike Pence turned him down.
Ashley Parker of The New York Times tweeted:
This morning, Pence called Trump and told him he had to handle the next 48 hours alone. He didn't think he'd be an effective surrogate.

Also per Trump campaign aide, Pence's tone was "disappointed" and "frustrated." He was not happy about the comments, or the ensuing fallout.

Trump is so toxic that his own running mate has gone into hiding and refused to come out. If Trump keeps going at his current pace, Mike Pence may not be publicly seen again until after the election.
Pence has his eye on the 2020 Republican presidential nomination. His refusal to step in for Trump was a clear signal that he sees the ship sinking, and he is trying to save his career.
It is every misogynist and gay hater for himself now.
Gov. Pence ditched the press and went into hiding after the video of Trump boasting about how he can get away with sexual assault was published. Pence reportedly blew a gasket after he watched the video.
It is too late for Pence. He has already been tainted with Trump stink. He can run, but he can’t hide from the fact that he was Donald Trump’s stooge.
Mike Pence is finished and going down in flames with Trump.
