Despite the fact that he wasn’t on the stage, Donald Trump is taking credit for winning the vice presidential debate.
Video:
Trump said, “How many of you watched the vice presidential debate last night? Mike Pence did an incredible job, and I’m getting a lot of credit because that’s really my first so-called choice. That was my first hire, as we would say in Las Vegas.”
Pence wasn’t Trump’s first choice. Mike Pence wasn’t even Trump’s third choice. It appears that Trump’s first choice may have been Ohio Gov. John Kasich followed by Chris Christie, and Newt Gingrich. Pence only got to be on the ticket because the Republican Party made Trump put him on the ticket.
What is even more outrageous is the idea that Donald Trump is trying to take credit for winning a vice presidential debate that he was not a participant in. Of course, Trump thinks that he deserves all of the credit. His campaign is a cult of personality that is driven by satisfying his own ego.
Trump’s campaign was hoping that Pence’s performance would inspire their candidate to buckle down and take the debates more seriously. Instead, Trump is pretending like he won the vice presidential debate and Gov. Mike Pence does not exist.
When a presidential candidate has to take credit for their running mate’s debate performance, things are going badly. Donald Trump is losing in every poll. He is one more bad debate away from being a dead man walking into election day, but Trump continues to pretend like he is winning.
Only a real loser would try to take credit for the perceived success of another, but that is exactly what Donald Trump has done.
