Donald Trump is claiming that the African-Americans who are protesting a police shooting in Charlotte, NC are on drugs.
Video:
While speaking in Pittsburgh, PA, Trump said:
If Trump would ever take questions from the press again, it would be great if someone would ask him exactly what he meant by the statement that drugs are playing a role in the protests that we are witnessing on television.
The Republican candidate for president is ignoring the issue of African-Americans being shot by law enforcement officers and instead appeared to claim that anyone who protests a police shooting is on drugs. When a group of white people protest, the odds are that Donald Trump doesn’t view them as a drugged up mob.
Trump is pulling straight from the 1968 playbook of Richard Nixon. He is trying to anoint himself the law and order president. Donald Trump is hoping to exploit the same race-based white fears that Nixon tapped into more than four decades ago.
The undertone of Trump’s tough talk about public safety is racial. He never talks about the people of the United States as an “us.” To Trump, African-Americans are a “they” and a “them.” Instead of seeing people who are fed up to the point of losing control over police violence, Trump thinks all black people are in inner cities and on drugs.
Any person who sees America through a lens of stereotype, division, and racial lines is not fit to occupy the Oval Office.
