According to a petulant Donald Trump, who thinks in terms of third-grade English and 140-character sound bites, Bernie Sanders “abandoned his revolution” and “totally sold out to Crooked Hillary Clinton.” The Trump cult of personality cannot conceive of something larger than himself.
So, jumping the snark, Trump tweeted last night,
But Bernie Sanders didn’t abandon his revolution in Cleveland. Bernie Sanders understands that his movement was never centered around one man, whereas Trump’s “movement” has always been about Trump. Sanders has bigger aims than self-aggrandizement, something Trump can never understand.
Sanders sent out an email to supporters last night saying,
Our campaign has always been about a grassroots movement of Americans standing up and saying: “Enough is enough. This country and our government belong to all of us, not just a handful of billionaires.”
He said,
I just finished speaking at the Democratic National Convention, where I addressed the historic nature of our grassroots movement and what’s next for our political revolution.
And that next step is a group called ‘Our Revolution‘ – you know, that revolution Trump claims he abandoned:
Our work will continue in the form of a new group called Our Revolution. The goal of this organization will be no different from the goal of our campaign: we must transform American politics to make our political and economic systems once again responsive to the needs of working families.
We cannot do this alone. All of us must be a part of Our Revolution.
He even has a book deal with Thomas Dunne Books to publish “Our Revolution: A Future to Believe In” in November.
Donald Trump should be very afraid, because far from giving up, Bernie Sanders is as committed as ever to defeating Donald Trump in November:
What we have done together is absolutely unprecedented, but there is so much more to do. It starts with defeating Donald Trump in November, and then continuing to fight for every single one of our issues in order to transform America.
We are going to fight to make sure that the most progressive platform in the history of the Democratic Party becomes law. This means working for a $15 federal minimum wage, fighting for a national fracking ban, and so many more progressive priorities.
Bernie Sanders has not abandoned his revolution. He is just getting started. He doesn’t have to be president to continue the movement he began, or to be its leader, pushing our country toward a more inclusive, fairer democracy, one designed to accommodate not just a few billionaires like Trump, but all Americans.
None of this should have come as a surprise to Trump. As he told supporters in June,
“We have begun the long and arduous process of transforming America – a fight that will continue tomorrow, next week, next year, and into the future. My hope is that when future historians look back and described how our country moved forward—into reversing the drift towards oligarchy and how we moved forward in creating a government which represents all of the people not just a few—that they will note that to a significant degree, that that effort began with the political revolution of 2016.”
So sad, Donald Trump. You should have been paying attention. Don’t worry about the door as you leave. We’ll lock it behind you.
