Hannity Asks, “When Has [Trump] Been Hostile To Non-White Voters?”

Last updated on July 17th, 2023 at 06:57 pm

When Hillary Clinton went on national TV and called Donald Trump a clueless insult machine, she was clearly seeing something Fox News’ Sean Hannity does not.

On his show Tuesday, Hannity didn’t even notice that just the other day, Trump called Hispanic voters in California “thugs” and “criminals.” This is on top of already having called them rapists early in his campaign.

Willful ignorance is a wonderful thing, and has become an art-form over at Fox News, where they regularly see things that don’t exist but won’t see things that do.

Watch what Hannity was pushing courtesy of Media Matters for America:

SEAN HANNITY (HOST): When the choice is Trump and Hillary, who are they going to go with?

KYLE KONDIK: Well, they might just stay home.

HANNITY: They going to go for four more years of Obama?

KONDIK: They might just stay home, you know — I think that one other problem for Trump is that the electorate is going to be probably for the first time more than 30 percent non-white in this election. The demographics are kind of moving a little bit against the Republicans, and Trump has been — let’s be honest, fairly hostile to non-white voters in this election. I think he needs to —

HANNITY: I don’t think he’s been hostile to — when has he been hostile to non-white voters? Where’s that?

KONDIK: Well, the non-white voters do perceive him to be hostile to them, and he’s got a lot of work to do in that department.

HANNITY: Well, but you can’t cite an example.

Well, you CAN cite an example. You can cite lots of examples in fact.

Democrats can take pleasure in knowing that what you don’t know – or in this case, what you refuse to know – can hurt you, and Hispanic voter registration is skyrocketing thanks to Trump. And as People For the American Way (PFAW) Director of Latinos Vote! and Manager of Political Campaigns Lizet Ocampo said in a statement Tuesday,

“Donald Trump’s unbridled xenophobia should’ve disqualified him from the presidency long ago, yet now he’s the presumptive nominee of the Republican Party. His horrific comments against Latinos, immigrants, women, and so many others started on Day One of his presidential campaign and they haven’t let up.

“No candidate can go after our community and win our vote. Latino voters have the power to decide who wins elections this year from a local level to the next president, and we will vote against the hate of Donald Trump and the Republican Party.”

Hispanic voters aren’t alone, of course. There is the obvious example of black voters, regularly roughed up and ejected from Trump rallies. Millennials are also flocking to the Democratic Party in reaction to Donald Trump’s hateful demagoguery, and 7 out of 10 women have an unfavorable opinion of Trump.

After calling for a ban on Muslim immigration, profiling Muslims, and embracing a McCarthyist plan to destroy them, you can bet Trump isn’t going to get the Muslim vote either. Not that there are a lot of them, but they are yet another example of a group that has been the subject of Trump’s hostility.

In fact, seventy-eight percent of Americans, “including most Republicans, see the Republican race as discourteous,” according to a recent poll by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. In large part, this is a reaction to Trump’s divisive rhetoric.

Sean Hannity can lie to himself. He can even lie to his viewers. That’s why they watch him, in fact, or anything on Fox News: dishonest reassurances. And this isn’t even the first Fox pundit to wipe away Trump’s racism. O’Reilly has already been there with his eraser.

Facts are facts: support for Trump is support for white nationalism. White supremacists are latching on to Trump precisely because, contrary to Hannity, he is hostile to non-white voters.

And facts do matter: Donald Trump has insulted just about every category of American voter save white males. The cumulative total of all the examples Hannity refuses to see are going to hurt him in November. It’s going to hurt him bad.

In the end, Trump has as much chance with non-white voters as he does fulfilling his promise to bring Joe Paterno back from the grave.
