A day after staging a presidential debate that humiliated an entire country, Marco Rubio took the Republican Party to a disgraceful new low by getting down into the mud with Donald Trump.
Video:
Sen. Rubio unloaded on Trump in at a rally in Dallas. He began by accusing Trump of never punching anyone in the face, “It’s time. The charade is up. This is a con job, where he’s going to Americans that are struggling. Americans that are hurting, and he’s implying I’m fighting for you because I’m a tough guy. A tough guy? This guy inherited $200 million. He’s never faced any struggle. The other day he told somebody, a protester, I’m going to punch you in the face. Donald Trump has never punched anyone in the face. Donald Trump is the first guy who begged for Secret Service protection. First guy. He’s never punched anyone in the face. I said it last night. If he had not inherited $200 million, right now, he’d be selling watches in Times Square, or be doing one of those infomercials on Saturday morning where he promises to teach you how to flip properties.”
In a Republican primary that has featured a candidate who touted attacking his mother with a hammer in his youth, debating whether or not Donald Trump has punched anyone in the face is a logical extension of the lunacy.
Rubio then read Trump’s typo-filled tweets to the audience and then said, “He called me Mr. Meltdown. Let me tell you something, last night in the debate during one of the breaks, two of the breaks, he went backstage, and he was having a meltdown,” Rubio claimed. ”First he had one of those makeup things applying around his mustache because he had one of those sweat mustaches. Then, then he asked for a full-length mirror, I don’t know why because the podium goes up to here. I don’t know why maybe to make sure his pants weren’t wet. Then I see him pacing back and forth, and then he’s huddled in the corner talking to somebody, and he’s like waving his arms up and down and the person’s trying to calm him down.”
Sen. Rubio is trying to throw Trump off of his game with personal insults and attacks, but this is the turf that Donald Trump wants to contest the Republican primary on. Trump’s attacks on everyone are ugly. Rubio has responded with his own ugliness, and all that has been accomplished is that none of the Republican candidates look presidential.
The entire primary is a disgraceful embarrassment to the country. Rubio has a good attack line building by calling out Trump’s silver spoon life, but reading his tweets to make fun of typos while accusing the man of wetting himself is something that would never happen in the Democratic race.
Rubio’s change of course in going after Trump is proof that even the campaign sees that their attacks on the billionaire’s contradictory statements were not as effective as they hoped. The mudslinging on the Republican side has hit an unprecedented level of nasty, and the only winner in this exchange is the Democratic Party.
