Hillary Clinton Calls On Obama To Nominate A True Progressive To The Supreme Court

While campaigning in South Carolina, Hillary Clinton rejected a potential moderate nominee to the Supreme Court and urged President Obama to nominate a true progressive.

At a campaign rally in South Carolina, Clinton said:

There has been some talk that maybe the president will nominate the Republican governor of Nevada. Now, I love Nevada, especially after last weekend.

I know the governor has done some good things, but I sure hope the president chooses a true progressive who will stand up for the values and the interests of the people of this country who understand that you need to protect the right to vote of a person, not the right of a corporation to buy an election, who will understand that we still need the Voting Rights Act to be enforced.

Former Sec. Clinton brought up a great point. Much of the discussion about the impact of a possible moderate nominee has centered around Citizens United, labor, and women’s rights. A more fundamental argument for a more liberal voice on the Supreme Court is centered around voting rights. As long as Republicans a majority in Congress and on the Supreme Court, the Voting Rights Act will not be restored.

Only a liberal majority on the Supreme Court will be able to restore voting protections. There is nothing more fundamental to our political system than voting. A moderate Republican may or may not restore voting rights. With the Republican Party intent on destroying itself by nominating Donald Trump , nominating a moderate is not a risk that President Obama has to take.

President Obama may be floating the idea of a moderate to gain political cover for a more liberal nominee. He also could be testing the strength of the Republican desire to obstruct his nominee. Either way, Hillary Clinton is making it clear that she wants the President to choose a progressive nominee.
