Democrats Attack Republican Corruption With Ethics Complaint Against Kevin McCarthy

Last updated on September 25th, 2023 at 02:46 pm

Rep. Alan Grayson’s ethics complaint Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) for misusing taxpayer funds for political purposes is the next step in the Democratic campaign to tackle the Republican culture of corruption in the House.

Grayson discussed his Ethics Committee complaint on CNN:

Grayson said, “The fact is that he (McCarthy) was bragging about the fact that he was wasting taxpayer money. Four and a half million dollars and counting, in order to destroy a Democrat’s political career.”

Rep. Grayson’s Ethics Committee complaint states, “On September 29, 2015, Representative McCarthy appeared on The Sean Hannity Show on Fox News, and he stated that the true purpose of the Select Committee on Benghazi was not to investigate the tragic death of four Americans killed during the terrorist attacks on U.S. facilities in Libya, but rather to drive down the poll numbers of Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Specifically, Representative McCarthy stated that: ‘Everybody thought Hillary Clinton was unbeatable, right? We put together a Benghazi special committee, a select committee. What are her numbers today? Her numbers are dropping. Why? ‘Cause she is untrustable. But no one would’ve known any of that had happened had we not fought and made that happen.’ This is a clear and unequivocal misuse of appropriated funds for political purposes, which is prohibited by the regulations of the Committee on House Administration.”

The Benghazi Committee is in the process of backfiring on Republicans. Kevin McCarthy blew the GOP’s cover. Grayson is correct. Republicans have misused taxpayer funds for partisan political purposes.

Instead of funding the needs of the American people, or giving the money back to the taxpayers, Republicans have wasted tens of millions of dollars on partisan political investigations. The IRS investigation cost taxpayers $14 million. Previous Benghazi investigations in the House have cost tens of millions of dollars.

Wasting taxpayer money on partisan investigations is part of a pattern of abuse of power within the House Republican majority.

Democrats are fighting back, but true victory will only happen when Republicans lose their House majority.
