Right Wingers Warp Civil Rights By Comparing Kim Davis to Rosa Parks and MLK

The Family Research Council gave lawbreaker Kim Davis the “Cost Of Discipleship Award” award Friday night at the right wing Values Voters Summit, comparing her to Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr.

Watch here via Right Wing Watch:

Tony Perkins compared Kim Davis to Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr. saying she “pursued justice at great personal cost.”

Perkins added, “Whether it was Abraham Lincoln asserting the Constitutionally unsettled nature of the Dred Scott decision; Rosa Parks refusing to sit at the back of a public bus or Martin Luther King risking the … call of police dogs to end legal segregation, our nation has been ennobled and enriched by historic citizens who declare their unwillingness to accept rulings and statutes that conflict with the laws of nature and with nature’s God.”

The Family Research Council even gave the Kentucky county clerk flowers while she cried like she was winning a pageant category for Best Denial of Rights category, because nothing says Right Wing Hero like going to jail due to breaking yet another law Republicans just don’t agree with.

Davis thanked the lord for her bigotry, “I feel so very undeserving. I want to start by thanking my lord and my savior Jesus Christ. Because without him, this would never have been possible.”

This time the law Republicans didn’t agree with was issuing a marriage license to a same sex couple, which is sort of like refusing to sit in the back of the bus, except that Kim Davis is the driver of the bus who ordered Rosa Parks to the back of the bus so a white man could sit down and not have to be around black people, and Republicans are giving her awards for it.

Martin Luther King’s dream was about all people being treated equally, which is the opposite of what Kim Davis and Republicans are doing when they stand against marriage equality. MLK said, “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”

And further, MLK’s speech shows that Republicans and Kim Davis are on the opposite side of the street from MLK:

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

Kim Davis, the Family Research Council, the Values Voters and the entire Republican Party are the driver of the bus who ordered Rosa Parks to the back of the bus and did everything in their power to kill MLK’s dream. They are the oppressors, not the oppressed. Yet they take refuge in crying about their wounds — self-inflicted wounds they got by standing in the path of another human who was reaching for the same rights these folks feel entitled to.

This kind of cruel segregation is seen as standing with Jesus in right wing circles. Staver introduced Kim Davis by saying God birthed her and she is standing with Jesus, “God birthed Kim Davis, and Joe Davis, and each one of you for this moment in American and world history… He’s looking for people who love Jesus Christ and who will stand for Him, who will not flinch when their time is called and that person is Kim Davis and Joe Davis. May God raise up more.”

Nope. Just nope. Kim Davis is Rosa Park’s bus driver and she actively worked against MLK’s dream. She is the bad guy in history; not the hero. And she just confirmed that by becoming a Republican in an age when all but the extremists are fleeing.
