Lawless Anti-Gay Kentucky County Clerk Continues To Refuse To Issue Marriage Licenses

Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis continued to refuse to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples on Tuesday morning, a day after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected her appeal requesting a stay on issuing licenses.  The defiant clerk began her day by turning down licenses for a pair of same sex couples. April Miller and Karen Roberts, as well as David Ermold and David Moore were denied licenses, as the lawless clerk asserted that she was denying them the licenses “under the authority of God”.

The clerk got into a tense verbal exchange with one of the license applicants. When David Moore said he was not leaving until he and his partner had their marriage license, she snapped back:

Then you’re going to have a long day.

Attorneys for the discriminated against couples filed a motion on Tuesday, to find Davis in contempt of court for refusing to issue the licenses. If found guilty, she could face fines and potentially jail time for being in contempt of the court.

Davis stopped issuing all marriage licenses in June, following the Supreme Court’s ruling legalizing same-sex marriages in all fifty states. She maintained that it would be against her Christian faith to comply with the law, because she has a moral objection to same-sex marriages.

If Davis does not wish to obey the law or to fulfill her professional responsibilities, perhaps she should find another line of work. She can play the victim and complain about religious persecution as much as she wants, but she no longer has any legal standing to continue to discriminate against the people of Rowan County.

There is no question that Kim Davis is in contempt of court and that she is unlawfully using her office to promote her own personal brand of bigotry, while completely disregarding the rights of the residents of Rowan County. She should be found in contempt and fined. If she continues to ignore the law, she should be removed from her position, and locked up in a jail cell, under the authority of the court.
