Hillary Clinton ripped Mitch McConnell and the Republican Party for not getting it after the Senate Majority Leader attacked the Democratic frontrunner.
During a speech in Kentucky, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell accused Hillary Clinton of playing the gender card, “I don’t think arguing ‘vote for me because I’m a woman’ is enough. You may recall my election last year. The gender card alone is not enough.”
Clinton responded to McConnell’s comments during herFacebook Q&A, “Wow. If that’s what he said, Mitch McConnell really doesn’t get it. There is a gender card being played in this campaign. It’s played every time Republicans vote against giving women equal pay, deny families access to affordable child care or family leave, refuse to let women make decisions about their health or have access to free contraception. These aren’t just women’s issues, they are economic issues that drive growth and affect all Americans. Anyone who doesn’t get that doesn’t understand what our lives are like.”
McConnell’s remarks were demeaning to Clinton’s career in public service. Hillary Clinton has accomplished more in her career than McConnell has in his own. All Mitch McConnell has ever been good at is getting reelected with lousy approval numbers. McConnell is most famous for obstructing legislation and blocking progress.
Mitch McConnell’s remarks were a version of the same theme that Republicans tried to use to stop Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012. The only difference is that instead of reminding everyone that Obama is black, McConnell is reminding voters that Hillary Clinton is a woman.
It is a joke that Republicans would try to tear down one of the most qualified presidential candidates in U.S. history with sexist gender politics, but McConnell’s remarks were standard operating procedure for the Republican Party. Former Sec. Clinton was correct. The gender card is being used by Republicans on a daily basis.
Never once has Hillary Clinton given a speech where she suggested that her gender was the centerpiece of her 2016 campaign. Clinton has traveled the country to give voters a detailed policy platform that provides insight into what a Hillary Clinton presidency would look like.
Racial politics couldn’t defeat President Obama, but that isn’t about to stop Republicans from trying to use sexist politics to defeat Hillary Clinton.
