John McCain will blame President Obama for anything, but the Arizona senator showed how far he will go by blaming Obama for the N. Korean government’s hack of Sony.
In a statement, McCain said,
Recently reported intelligence findings that North Korea directed cyber-attacks at Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sony Pictures’ decision to cancel the release of an upcoming movie in reaction to those cyber-attacks, are profoundly troubling.
By effectively yielding to aggressive acts of cyber-terrorism by North Korea, that decision sets a troubling precedent that will only empower and embolden bad actors to use cyber as an offensive weapon even more aggressively in the future.
But, make no mistake. The need for Sony Pictures to make that decision ultimately arose from the Administration’s continuing failure to satisfactorily address the use of cyber weapons by our nation’s enemies.
According to McCain, it is all President Obama’s fault that Sony had woefully inadequate cybersecurity. Sony isn’t alone in this area. One of the ways that many companies try to cut corners is by using a bare bones cybersecurity setup. In McCain’s view, it is also Obama’s fault that somebody at Sony went forward with a movie about assassinating the leader of a foreign country, and didn’t stop to this that this might cause some blowback. It is not Obama’s fault that Sony didn’t plan ahead and anticipate the possibility that impoverished N. Korea would turn to cybercrime in order to stop the release of the film.
By giving the hackers so much free publicity, the media also played a role in rewarding N. Korea’s crimes. I assume that McCain believes that the media coverage is also Obama’s fault. It is especially not Obama’s fault that Sony caved and killed the release of The Interview.
What McCain failed to mention was that President Obama has been proposing a budget that would make cybersecurity funding a priority for the past three years. Earlier this year, the president released a comprehensive cybersecurity plan.
Obama can’t make the private sector take cybersecurity seriously. Obama has been addressing the nation’s cybersecurity issues for years. It is Republicans like John McCain who have chosen to do nothing, but object to every presidential proposal. The bottom line is that it isn’t Obama’s fault that Sony pulled The Interview.
McCain’s statement is more proof that blind and bitter Obama hate causes Republicans to blame the president for everything, including the hacking of Sony.
