During an appearance on Fox News Radio’s The John Gibson Show Tuesday, Fox News contributor and psychiatrist Keith Ablow claimed that President Obama wants the Ebola virus to spread in the United States because “his affiliations are with” Africa. Ablow also stated that Obama considers himself the leader of Africa and not the President of the United States. The member of Fox News’ ‘Medical A-Team’ also went on a rant about the United States only electing Obama because the country was suffering from Stockholm Syndrome. In Ablow’s opinion, Americans thought if we elected a black man with a name that sounded like a mix of Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein that we would no longer be attacked by terrorists. Seriously, he actually said this.
The good doctor gave his ‘diagnosis’ of Obama, as he has done countless times on Fox News programs, even though Ablow has never actually spoken with or been anywhere close to the President. However, that hasn’t stopped Ablow from providing his ‘expert’ opinion about President Obama and his psyche. On Tuesday, Ablow suggested that Obama wants America to suffer for its ill-gotten gains and therefore is purposely allowing Ebola to spread within the country’s borders. He also said that Obama thinks of himself as the leader of the entire world (a claim he’s made before) and that he doesn’t actually like America. Since he dislikes the United States, why would he be interested in protecting it?
While discussing Obama’s ‘psyche’ with Gibson, Ablow decided to role-play and spoke as if he was Obama.
“You miserable people have destroyed so much in the world in terms of good things, and now you’re going to build a wall? Really? To insulate yourself from things that are devastating other nations when your gains are ill-gotten? And the very fact that you can build a wall — you’re using wealth that you never should have had to build it. This is just another manifestation of you didn’t build that, business. Right? You didn’t build the right to make yourself immune from something that is devastating a country with lesser resources.”
Of course, the crazy train kept on rolling. Ablow insisted that the United States doesn’t have a president. Instead, President Obama really only cares about Africa, because, you know, he’s black and all.
“His affinities, his affiliations are with them. Not us. That’s what people seem unwilling to accept. He’s their leader … we don’t have a president…We don’t have a president who has the American people as his primary interest.”
From there, Ablow told Gibson that the main reason Obama even got elected is that the majority of Americans were so traumatized by 9/11 that they decided to vote for someone whose name not only sounds like two of our biggest enemies, but who also thinks the country is evil and hates it.
“What would the cure be? The cure is 2016, perhaps, where people finally say look, here is what happened. They knocked down our buildings on 9/11. It was horrible. It was horrible. It was unspeakable. In the aftermath of that, we got something like national Stockholm Syndrome, which is what people get when they’re taken hostage on planes. And for a time, they start expressing the feelings of the people who took them hostage because they don’t want to die.
And I think that we became psychologically mired in a form of national Stockholm Syndrome. We said to ourselves, and the world, “Look at this guy. We’re going to elect this guy president. Why would you attack us? We’re not even voting for somebody who likes us. This guy, who has names very similar to two of our archenemies, Osama, well, Obama. And Hussein. Hussein. Surely you won’t attack us now because we’ve got a shield here of a guy who, as the leader of our country says we’re bad. So leave us alone. We get the message.”
Now that was a really horrible psychological strategy because that doesn’t stop anybody, number one, from attacking you. And what it does is it removes the United States from its rightful place at the leading edge of a march for freedom in the world and encourages those who hate freedom like ISIL to go on their own march, which they have.”

It appears that Ablow was following along a narrative he’d pushed in a column he wrote for FoxNews.com a few days earlier. In that article, he said that President Obama wouldn’t impose a travel ban on western African countries because he feels that America should suffer.
Such a travel ban would go some distance to stem the tide of Ebolophobia, too. It would symbolize our country’s intention to shore up its defenses against the illness. But President Obama is very sensitive to being defined in any way by the borders of this country. I think he sees himself as a citizen of the world and sees Americans as having infected others with our deadly economic policies for a long time, thereby inflicting untold suffering on developing nations. To now lead the way to America insulating itself from a scourge sweeping the very countries he seems to think we have preyed upon could, of course, strike him (if only unconsciously) as profoundly unfair.
I believe the president may literally believe we should suffer along with less fortunate nations. And if he does, that is a very dangerous psychological stance from which to confront Ebola.
Let me say this plainly, as a psychiatrist who has studied this president only from a distance: In order for President Obama to keep thinking of himself as the leader of the world — and not just the free world — it may be that our boundaries must remain porous, allowing illegal immigrants and, potentially, even diseases to flow through them.
This is pure nuttery and something we only hear from the extreme fringe of the right. The problem that exists with Ablow is that he’s trotted out by Fox News on a daily basis as a legitimate psychiatrist whose opinion should be taken seriously. While we all know that Fox News is nothing more than the propaganda arm of the Republican Party, it still tries to position itself as a real news outlet. Yet, they have one of their featured contributors going out there and spewing the kind of conspiracy-fueled nonsense that would make even the most racist birther blush.
Will Fox do anything to Ablow after this disgustingly awful rant? I doubt it. In fact, this will probably lead to more appearances for him. He is telling the bigoted base of the Fox audience what they want to hear.
