House Majority Leader Eric Cantor and the GOP have a new ACA lie. They are blaming Obamacare for HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius’ resignation.
Cantor tweeted:
I thank Secretary Sebelius for her service. She had an impossible task: nobody can make Obamacare work.
— Eric Cantor (@GOPLeader) April 10, 2014
It is amazing that Rep. Cantor (R-VA) can jam so many lies into a single tweet. There is zero evidence that Sebelius is resigning because of Obamacare. She is one of the longest serving members of the cabinet. She has been in office since the president’s first term. Cabinet secretary overturn is normal in the second term of any presidency.
Secondly, Obamacare is working. Obamacare enrollment has now topped 7.5 million with a 400,000 increase in the past week. These numbers do not include the March 31 surge of signups before the ACA deadline. The idea that Obamacare is not working is straight up fantasy. People are paying their premiums and getting enrolled. The law is doing exactly what it is supposed to do. The idea that it isn’t is a complete lie.
The fact that Republicans are celebrating Sebelius’ resignation as some kind of anti-Obamacare win demonstrates how pathetic they have become.
Kathleen Sebelius can walk away now, because Obamacare is working. It is likely that she only stayed in the job for as long as she did because she wanted to get the ACA launched and into a good place. The ACA is in a good place now. It isn’t perfect. More work needs to be done, and the implementation of the law will continue to be tweaked, but it was a job well done.
Kathleen Sebelius has earned it. She can walk away with her head held high. Anyone who suggest otherwise is dreaming.
