On Wednesday morning, Tim Sheridan, Democratic candidate for California’s 42nd District, issued a press release. The statement showed both his both his personal support for the extension of unemployment benefits and slammed his opponent, Rep. Ken Calvert (R-CA), for his lack of action on this issue. He also took Calvert to task for his inability and apparent lack of interest in bringing jobs to his district, which has a significantly higher unemployment rate than the rest of the nation.
PoliticusUSA had the good fortune of having sat down with Mr. Sheridan to discuss his campaign a few weeks ago. Hopefully, the good people of the 42nd District see the fraud that Ken Calvert is and will vote him out in November, helping to give Democrats control of the House. Below is the press release in its entirety:
Tim Sheridan, the Democratic Party’s leading candidate in the race for California’s 42nd Congressional District, remarked today that he “was encouraged by the bi-partisan Senate vote to hear debate on the extension of unemployment benefits”.
Riverside, California has an unemployment rate estimated in December 2013 at 9.6%. This compares to a national unemployment rate for the same period of 6.1%. (http://www.calmis.ca.gov/file/lfmonth/rive$pds.pdf). “The current Congressman, Ken Calvert, has failed to bring enough jobs to our area,” Sheridan added. “Let’s hope he stands with those unemployed in the 42nd and votes to extend unemployment benefits when the bill reaches the House.”
According to the Congressional Budget Office, the extension of benefits would be beneficial to the economy – both by increasing the GDP and, surprisingly enough, by creating jobs. The CBO says that when the unemployed spend their unemployment benefits, it helps local business. “Supporting this measure makes a lot of sense,” Sheridan said. “Mr. Calvert would be hurting both those who are unemployed and local business if he does not vote for the extension.”
Sheridan, who currently serves as the Democratic State Central Committee AD 67 Executive Board Representative, is an eleven-year resident of Menifee seeking his first elective office. California’s 42nd Congressional District covers a small part of Hemet and includes Corona, Lake Elsinore, Murrieta and Menifee, among other cities.
