Al Franken Chastises House Republicans for Holding the Economic Recovery Hostage

Last updated on September 25th, 2023 at 08:41 pm

After voting with a majority of Senators to reject the latest spending bill from the House of Representatives, Senator Al Franken (D-MN) issued a statement chastising Republicans for holding the economic recovery hostage.

“Minnesotans do not want a government shutdown. They want us to get things done,” said Sen. Franken. “Republicans in the House continue to insist on holding our economic recovery hostage while they refight the same political battles over and over again. The Senate passed a bill to keep the government running, and it’s time for the House to act responsibly and prevent a government shutdown. We need to get back to doing what we were sent here to do: put people back to work, improve education, and strengthen our economic recovery.”

Republicans are going to shutdown the government even though according to a new poll “only 33 percent believe that the health law should be repealed, delayed, or defunded.”

But a new survey of 1,976 registered voters finds that only 33 percent believe that the health law should be repealed, delayed, or defunded. 29 percent believe that “Congress should make changes to improve the law,” 26 percent believe that “Congress should let the law take effect” and see what happens, and 12 percent believe that the law should be expanded. The bottom line? Voters are skeptical that Obamacare will live up to Democrats’ hype. But they also believe that it should be given a chance to succeed.

In case the pundits are still trolling with their “gridlock” meme, it’s beyond obvious that Republicans are the party threatening a shutdown in order to delay the implementation of a law with which they disagree. It is also becoming obvious that Democrats are done appeasing Republicans and are not afraid of the beltway’s false equivocation that “both sides do it.”

Republicans continue trying to blame Democrats for this shutdown and furthering the “gridlock” meme, however, it is Nancy Pelosi and House Democrats who would rescue House Republicans from political implosion by passing a clean CR. Only one party is doing the job of the people. The other party is very busy shrilly misleading the American people on TV, as their hand hovers over the red button to destroy all that we’ve worked so hard to accomplish over the past five years.
