Whatever mistake you made at work today was nothing compared to what happened at KTVU, where the station reported the names of the pilots of Asiana flight 214 as Sum Ting Wong and Wi Tu Lo.
This is a fail that you really have to see in order to believe:
Ho Lee Fuk. How did that manage to slip by an entire newsroom and make it on the air?
The station claimed in an apology on their website that the names had been confirmed by an NTSB official, “Prior to air, the names were confirmed by an NTSB official in the agency’s Washington, D.C. office. Despite that confirmation, KTVU realized the names that aired were not accurate and issued an apology later in the newscast. The correct names of the pilots in the cockpit were Lee Gang-guk and Lee Jeong-Min.”
This was obviously a bit of karma biting the station in the backside because earlier in the week they sent out a press release bragging that their coverage of the crash was 100% accurate. “Being first on air and on every platform in all aspects of our coverage was a great accomplishment, but being 100% accurate, effectively using our great sources and social media without putting a single piece of erroneous information on our air, is what we are most proud of as a newsroom,” said Lee Rosenthal, KTVU News Director.
Yep, they are 100% accurate if you don’t count the time that they made themselves a national laughingstock. Sum Ting Wong, indeed.
This should be a lesson to all members of the media. Never brag about being 100% accurate. No one is 100% accurate all the time. Everybody else should sit back and watch what is certain to become a staple of news blooper segments for decades to come. This was an all time Fuk up that their grandchildren’s grandchildren will still be laughing about in the future.
