An uninformed and misguided Bill Maher has decided to blame liberals instead of the NRA and red state Democrats for the lack of stronger legislation to deal with gun violence.
Here is the video:
Maher was complaining about the gun reform bill that the Senate is debating when he found an odd target for his wrath. Maher said, “I’m sorry, but this is the problem with the gun debate. It’s a center-right debate. There’s no left in this debate. Everyone on the left is so afraid to say what needs to be said, which is the Second Amendment is bullsh*t.”
I think Bill Maher’s entire premise is wrong. After Newtown, there was a very liberal tilt towards the gun violence discussion. It isn’t that the left hasn’t fought hard enough, or spoken loudly enough. The problem is politics, and the opposition of red state Democrats to stronger gun laws.
Bill Maher should tell Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly that they are afraid to say what needs to be said. He should tell Jim and Sarah Brady who have been fighting for decades, when few other people were, that they aren’t saying what needs to be said. Tell President Obama and Vice President Biden who are fighting everyday to make sure that Newtown isn’t forgotten that they aren’t saying what needs to be said.
Maher needs to actually go talk to people on the left all across this country who unlike him, actually own guns.
Maher’s attack on liberals completely ignored the fact that a group of red state Democrats who are so terrified of the NRA that they killed the assault weapons ban, and are watering down the legislation.
It seems that Mr. Maher has been listening to the ideological absolutists on the far left who consider anything other than total victory, complete failure. Newsflash for Bill Maher, there are millions of liberals in the country who don’t want to ban all guns, but are still fighting for change.
For the sake of argument, let’s say liberals do it Bill Maher’s way. What if all liberals stood up and called bullsh*t on the Second Amendment? Sure, it would feel good, but what happens after that? The right responds with no, it’s not you un-American commie pinko, nothing changes, and everybody forgets about the issue until more people die in the next mass shooting.
If Bill Maher really wants to blame somebody, here’s a list of red state Democratic senators who are standing in the way of stronger gun reform.
If fingers must be pointed, I suggest he start there.
