Rick Perry Decides That Everyone in Texas Opposes Same Sex Marriage

Rick Perry thinks that he speaks for everyone in the state of Texas, because the governor declared to reporters that both he and the state oppose gay marriage.

When Gov. Perry was asked about the same sex marriage cases that the Supreme Court is currently hearing, he said, “In Texas, it is fairly clear about where this state stands on that issue. As recently as a constitutional amendment that passed – I believe, with 76 percent of the vote. The people of the state of Texas, myself included, believe marriage is between one man and one woman.”

Perry was referencing a 2005 passed constitutional amendment in the state, but national attitudes have changed quickly on the issue around the country, so it is doubtful that if the same vote were taken again today, a statewide ban on same sex marriage would get 76% support.

Gov. Perry is showing signs of being a politician that has been in power for way too long, but his arrogant belief that he is the voice of Texas isn’t his only problem. Perry is fading fast in the state. According to the latest UT/Texas Tribune Poll, only 26% of voters will definitely support Perry. Thirty six percent of those surveyed will definitely vote against him, and 33% will wait and see. Among Republicans, 46% said that they would definitely vote for him, but 44% said that they would wait and see.

2012 apparently wasn’t enough of a humiliation for him, because Rick Perry is eyeing another run at the Republican nomination in 2016. His comments on the Supreme Court cases were another attempt to pander to socially conservative Republican primary voters. These folks also just so happen to be the exact same people that the RNC is desperately trying to remove from power within the party.

One of the surest signs that a politician has been in power for way too long is when he/she assumes they hold a voice of God like power to speak for their entire state. Rick Perry represents the GOP’s out of touch wing on marriage equality, and he isn’t getting the message that Texas is telling him that it is time for him to go.
