The new meme to come out of the Romney family is that Mitt never wanted to be President anyway, so fug you America! I guess it wasn’t “his turn” after all.
Yes, Tagg Romney told the Boston Globe that Mitt never wanted to president. He only ran for 6 years because he couldn’t find anyone as perfect as Himself to run. The brutal Republican primaries notwithstanding, we are to believe Romney never wanted it. It was, we’re told, Romney’s love of God and country that made him run.
“He wanted to be president less than anyone I’ve met in my life. He had no desire to . . . run,” said Tagg, who worked with his mother, Ann, to persuade his father to seek the presidency. “If he could have found someone else to take his place . . . he would have been ecstatic to step aside. He is a very private person who loves his family deeply and wants to be with them, but he has deep faith in God and he loves his country, but he doesn’t love the attention.”
Well, that explains so much. I mean, remember when Mitt threw a fit because the crowd loved Ryan more than him?
Romney is introducing Ryan to the crowd and the crowd starts cheering spontaneously “Ryan, Ryan, Ryan!”
All is well! They crowd is fired up! This is the point, right? Right?
But then immediately the sun goes out.
Romney looks at the crowd and at Ryan and then he admonishes the crowd with his hand held up in the HALT position, “Wait a sec, wait a sec! Romney, Ryan, Romney, Ryan, Romney, Ryan.” (Emphasis Romney)
The crowd falls silent. They are not chanting Romney Ryan. Awkward.
Romney, befuddled, seems to think the crowd has complied, “There we go. That’s great.” Gesturing confusedly back to Ryan, he says, “Thank you.”
Or the time Mitt forced Univision to re-tape his intro in order to make him look better by omitting the truth, after he packed the hall with non-students because he couldn’t find enough supporters on campus?
Mitt doesn’t love attention? Sorry, but everyone could see how Romney got high off of adulation and in fact this addiction to approval is what allowed him to believe his team’s hype. Romney believed he was winning even on election day. They had their own polls, ya’ know. Romney giddily told reporters about “the crowds” coming to see him. He never understood that some of those crowds had been bused in, or came to see the band, or that a crowd does not an election make.
Over and over again, Romney appeared before reporters steeped in smugness and unsuccessfully repressed grins of imagined victory. His presser after Benghazi is but the most extreme example of Romney’s love of attention and his narcissistic inability to see what others see. He thought he was winning, when in fact he was failing miserably.
In case anyone is still confused about why Obama won and why his win was a reflection of his superior talents as an executive: While Romney let ORCA test run on election day, team Obama repeatedly tested their technology. This is what smart people do. It’s called leadership.
Separately, the Obama team created a system called ¬Narwahl, named after an Arctic whale, which linked disparate computer programs together. Narwahl and Gordon would be tested repeatedly in exercises that Obama’s team called “game day.” Every imaginable failure would be thrown at the systems — hacker attacks, database meltdowns, Internet failures — and the team would be challenged to write up a manual for how to deal with each ¬disaster. It was, they said, more fun than the fantasy war game Dungeons & Dragons.
Maybe Romney let ORCA fail because of his love for God and privacy. Maybe he smeared half of America out of love for his country. Maybe he felt entitled to the White House because he saw himself as the Only One. Maybe he never really wanted what he worked so hard to get. Maybe he spent 6 years chasing after the family dream of being President when he really just wanted to be home loving his family.
Romney used to only hate half of America, but now his son seems to be saying FU, America. We never wanted you anyway! No doubt Tagg loves his father deeply, but he still doesn’t get it. Tagg still thinks that America never got to know the Real Romney. Tagg thinks that if we just knew what he did for personal friends, we’d have loved Mitt. In fact, it is what Romney had in mind for those who were not personal friends that was precisely the issue.
The King starved the village but he was kind to his servants so the village should love him? See, Tagg, the village gets to vote in America, so this whole benevolent king notion might well have been the problem.
If Mitt only wanted to run because of his love for God and country, then what does it mean that we’re now told that he didn’t want to run? No matter, Mitt’s taking his ball and going home. He never liked you anyway. So there.
