Axelrod on Romney’s Foreign Policy: ‘We all remember his Dukes of Hazard tour’

In preparation for Monday night’s debate centered on foreign policy, the Obama camp is hitting Romney hard on his foreign policy of “blunder and bluster” and “chest-beating”. In a memorable appearance on Meet the Press, David Axelrod said of the green Mitt Romney, “We all remember his Dukes of Hazard tour of international destinations of the summer where he not only roiled countries that are not as friendly to us, but our best ally, Britain. He was wrong on Libya. He was wrong on Iraq.”

They’re also prepping Americans for Monday night’s debate with a video titled, “Foreign Policy: President Obama’s Strong and Steady Leadership vs. Romney’s Blunder and Bluster”, which stars foreign policy experts such as Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, Senator John Kerry, Admiral John Nathman (ret.), and Former Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Michèle Flournoy.

Watch here:

Former Secretary of State Madeline Albright slammed Governor Romney’s chest beating foreign policy in newspapers from battleground states. She wrote, “He has absolutely no experience, and neither has Congressman Ryan, in foreign policy. I’ve never seen a ticket like this… You don’t get the sense Gov. Romney has an overall view beyond just chest-beating for how America should behave in the 21st century.” She continued, “I don’t know where Gov. Romney is (on foreign policy). I don’t have a clue, and he’s made some pretty glaring mistakes.”

On Meet the Press Sunday, Obama adviser David Axelrod pointed to Romney’s disastrous summer tour in which he attempted to prove himself ready to be President but failed.

AXELROD: People want to know that they have a strong, steady hand in the Oval Office. And they don’t want someone who’s reckless and who’s been consistently wrong on foreign policy issues, as Governor Romney has. We all remember his Dukes of Hazard tour of international destinations of the summer where he not only roiled countries that are not as friendly to us, but our best ally, Britain. He was wrong on Libya. He was wrong on Iraq.

If Americans want to know what a Mitt Romney presidency would be in terms of our foreign policy, they need only know three things: 1) Romney’s foreign policy team is comprised of the worst of the George W Bush neo cons. 2) Romney’s new team of “military advisers” is comprised of folks who “left the government only to become highly paid consultants and board members to major weapons makers”. 3) Mitt Romney politicized the tragedy in Libya for personal gain within hours of it happening, causing division in the country.

Counterterrorism expert Richard Clarke said that Romney’s comments only prove what he doesn’t know about terrorism, “Mitt Romney seems fixated on why Washington did not know with better clarity and sooner what went on during a terrorist attack. It is the kind of question that comes from someone who has no experience dealing with terrorism crisis management or, indeed, combat.”

We all know why Romney did it; he promised his wealthy donors he would “take advantage” of a situation like a hostage crisis in order to get elected. That’s not presidential, nor is it safe or smart. Yes, Romney’s Dukes of Hazard summer of epic clownery was ridiculous, but what Governor Romney did after Libya isn’t funny at all. Take a look at his advisers and the weapon makers backing him, and you’ll understand that what looks like clownery is actually a concerted effort to stir the pot for another war.

Niether Mitt Romney nor his running mate Paul Ryan have any experience in foreign relations, other than Romney’s proven ability to anger our allies, mislabel Russia as our number one geopolitical foe and use a tragedy for political gain.
