So you heard the one about the legitimate rape Republican who was very concerned about abortions being performed on women who are not pregnant, right? No?
Republican U.S. Rep. Todd Akin made headlines a few days ago when comments he made in 2008 about abortions being performed when women weren’t pregnant made the Internet rounds. In case you thought this was a misquote, he’s doubling down. No, this is not satire. Akin is running against
Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill, who is now leading him in the latest poll by 6 points due precisely to the kind of rhetoric below.
Todd feels that the real war on women is abortions being performed on women who aren’t pregnant. In 2008, he said these non legitimate abortions were being performed by “terrorists”. Asked where these non-legitimate abortions were taking place, Akin cited a 1978 news report. SEE? He’s not crazy!
Rick Tyler, Akin’s campaign spokesman, told Buzzfeed, “There’s ample evidence that abortion doctors on any number of occasions have deceived women into thinking that they’re pregnant, and then collect money for a procedure that they don’t perform. And I say they don’t perform it because obviously the women weren’t pregnant.”
But wait. The evidence is a news story from 1978, but Todd is still very concerned because no one knows if it’s still going on because, according to Akin’s spokesman, no one reports on it.
“Who would know? No one reports on it anymore. That’s a war on women that never gets reported.”
Ah. Glad we cleared that up. Then, for the kicker, Akin’s spokesman announces that he doesn’t want Akin held to any standards, “I don’t want Todd to be held to some standard because there’s no accurate reporting on abortion, because there isn’t.”
So, that boogeyman that no one can see because it doesn’t exist? That is the war on women. Legitimate abortions are the issue; not Akin’s Republican legitimate rape. And don’t you dare ask for details. Don’t you know they keep the non-abortion reporting where they put the REAL Romney polls?
A not legitimate abortion, of course, would not be an abortion…. It would be a D&C, which we women do get after a miscarriage or due to other issues, which I’m sure Akin knows even less about than he does non-abortions, legitimate rapes, and the general healthcare, anatomy and medical realities of women.
Todd Akin has been a U.S. representative for six terms, and Americans are just now finding out that he is not all there. Back in 2008, in this same speech, Akin said that these doctor terrorists also don’t pay their taxes (gasp – has he met Mitt Romney?), “You find that along with the culture of death go all kinds of other lawbreaking — the not following good sanitary procedures, giving abortions to women who are not actually pregnant, cheating on taxes, all these kinds of things, the misuse of anesthetic so that people die or almost die. All of these things are common practice.”
Can we at least agree that men should probably not legislate women’s health?
