Barackness Monster ain’t buying it, the GOP need to find something new to do like Tim Tebow. If you like where this is going, then you have to watch the POTUS with Mostest slow jam the news with Jimmy Fallon.
Jimmy cries out, “Hit me presidential style! “ as POTUS and Fallon slow jam the need for congress to give students some relief by extending lower interest rates for student loans. In a few months, those interest rates are set to double.
The show was taped live in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Watch here:
Fallon’s band The Roots spiced up the jam with soulful “Oh, Pell no!” Obama got big cheers when he said “some in congress” don’t think we should extend the lower rates but instead want to deal with the deficit while refusing to tax the millionaires.
Fallon lets out a soulful, “The right and left should join on this like Kim and Kanye.”
“The Republicans can filibuster but they are gonna feel it, buster… The GOP say no, no, no, they should find something new to do like Tim Tebow.”
You know who else is gonna feel it? Mitt Romney. Can you imagine Mitt Romney slow jamming the news? Yeah, I didn’t think so.
Mitt Romney’s problem is that try as he might to use Obama’s charm against him by painting Obama a celebrity (ala McCain 2008 until they got their own celebrity and then big crowds were super), behind Obama’s cool ease in almost any situation is a brilliant mind for policy and quite possibly one of the best chess players we’ve had as President of the United States.
The Prezi even got in a compliment to Mitt’s wife, Anne when asked about his opponent, “I’ve met him. But we’re not friends. He seems like somebody who cares deeply about his family, and his wife is lovely.” Ah, class. That’s gotta hurt. No one understands the Republican need for victimization better than this President and he rarely gives them a chance to wallow in their self-constructed fantasies by playing dirty in return.
This leaves Republicans having to make up insults, which works fine with their base, but not so much with the rest of the world. Remember in 2008 when Sarah Palin wouldn’t stop whining about how Obama said his family was off limits when what he really said was that her family was off limits? She looked like quite the silly, whiny fool to anyone who didn’t live in Foxland. Republicans love to inflict cheap, manufactured pain (“Pallin’ around with terrorists”) while playing the martyr for their deliberately stoked, persecution complex base.
Now that we’ve seen the POTUS with the Mostest in action, we understand exactly why Republicans are trying to keep college students from being able to vote. Just wait till Americans hear that Romney cares so little about equal opportunities that he wants to kill public education all together. Yes, Mitt Romney’s version of a better America involves tax cuts for the rich and getting rid of that pesky institution of public learning.
We must all remember that Romney went to a very prestigious private boarding school in what was at one time the second highest income area of the United States (Bloomfield Hills, second to Beverly Hills at one time). He may not understand that the cost of tuition at his high school is more than most Americans make in a year; in fact, the tuition at Cranbrook is higher than the total of what Romney called a “good middle class job”.
Tuition at Cranbrook is Grades 9-12 is $28,300/year plus activity fees and boarding costs. Boarding brings it to $38,90 a year. While Romney lived near Cranbrook, many local families send their children to board at Cranbrook for a variety of reasons. It is estimated to cost parents around $45,000 a year all told, and that doesn’t include the field trips and Ski Clubs, or the holiday with the friends trips to Aspen and Switzerland.
Cranbrook is a tremendous school with a heavy emphasis on art and science, though I hear Romney didn’t excel there. I attended Brookside and Kingswood, Cranbrook. But just because my parents were able to find a way to help me attend an excellent private school (thanks in part to Cranbrook’s merit based scholarships) doesn’t mean that everyone has that opportunity. In fact, most children do not. Part of what makes this country so great is the idea that everyone gets a public education, so we are not supposedly divided into class structures where the higher classes are impenetrable.
Just a month ago, Romney was selling his idea of a Super America where yearly salary of $19,000 was a “middle class job” and now he wants to kill public education. The math for Romney’s vision for America doesn’t work out, and I have to wonder if he even understands the units of money most Americans live by. I fear that if it’s not in the hundreds of thousands, he has no idea what things cost or what it means to make $19,000 a year.
Meanwhile, President Obama is fighting for everyone to have the same opportunities he had. Obama was not raised with a silver spoon in his mouth; he worked hard and studied so that he qualified for scholarships in order to attend great universities. The First Lady also knows all about college loans. The Obamas just finished paying off their college loans eight years go. The President said, “Check this out, all right. I’m the president of the United States. We only finished paying off our student loans off about eight years ago. That wasn’t that long ago. And that wasn’t easy–especially because when we had Malia and Sasha, we’re supposed to be saving up for their college educations, and we’re still paying off our college educations.”
College loans can cripple graduates as they enter to work force. By keeping the interest rates low, we support a better America as well as the American dream.
College and public education should be available to all who want it; not a luxury of the privileged.
