Kid you not; Rush Limbaugh basked in the attention that comes with calling a dignified and intelligent young woman a slut and a whore. It was probably the most erotic experience he has had in a very long time – at least until he started losing sponsors.
First, let’s clarify some things. All this started when the Republicans refused to hear Sandra Fluke’s testimony. After all, what insights could a dignified and articulate young woman possibly have offer about oral contraceptives? What insights could Sandra Fluke possibly offer about the reality that oral contraceptives are prescribed for a variety of issues that have nothing to do with the stereotypical images the Republican propaganda machine has pushed for years? How could a woman offer any insights into matters like a friend not going to the doctor after being raped because she didn’t think it was covered by her health insurance?
The reality is she could offer insights into these questions. Moreover, Sandra Fluke appears to be an effective speaker.
Despite the Republican’s best efforts, Sandra Fluke’s testimony was heard, albeit by Democrats. Fluke’s testimony also got a lot of media attention, which the old boys club may have recognized as a direct hit on their agenda.
Enter Rush Limbaugh, who probably went limp by the mere thought of a young woman derailing Republican efforts to put women in their place once and for all.
And we all know how adept Rush is at pushing the hate meter. He really out lied himself this week when he claimed that Fluke couldn’t afford the birth-control for all the sex she was having. Never mind that Fluke’s testimony included accounts of a friend who was raped, but didn’t go to the doctor because she didn’t think her insurance plan would cover it. Never mind that Fluke talked a friend who lost an ovary because of cysts that could have been prevented had she been prescribed birth control pills.
It is also clear that Rush doesn’t know a darn thing about birth control pills. The dosage is the same regardless of the frequency of a woman’s sexual activity. But hey, why let a little detail like that get in the way of a good character assassination.
If you managed to miss what Rush said in character assault number one, here it is in all its vulgarity.
Rush’s character assassination also included a few more lies for good measure. Just in case attacking a college student isn’t enough red meat for his ditto heads. The issue is the access to contraception in health insurance coverage. Those premiums are paid for by employers and by people who self-insure. In other words, neither Fluke nor anyone else is advocating that government pay for women’s contraceptives. Of course, the truth didn’t fit Limpo’s character assassination.
The predictable outrage that ensued was without question, the most erotic experience Limbaugh has had in a long time. That may very well be the motive behind his subsequent demand that Sandra Fluke and anyone else who dares to want access to birth control make porn videos and put them on line for him and anyone else to say.
The result was a social media campaign, on twitter, on Facebook and Reddit calling for a boycott of Rush’s sponsors.
As reported by politico, whatever pleasures Rush got from demanding that women swap skin flicks for their contraceptives Sleep Train and Sleep number beds were the first of Rush’s sponsors to flee from Rush’s perverted mind and more perverted mouth. There’s poetic justice that the first sponsors Rush lost following his demand for skin flicks in exchange for access to birth control were a company companies that sell mattresses and beds. Quicken loans followed obviously recognizing that Rush’s dirty talk would be bad for business.
He still has some sponsors that either haven’t gotten the message yet or are simply hoping that memories will fade over the weekend. I think it’s time to let them know that this isn’t going away until Rush does.
According to Media Matters, Limbaugh lost 50 sponsors since his comments about Sandra Fluke.
A big thank you to the Limp one’s now former sponsors!
Since Rush is promoting pornography on public airwaves, it is more than appropriate to file a complaint with the FCC at: http://esupport.fcc.gov/complaints.htm
Also left action has a petition calling for a boycott. Link on word petition http://leftaction.com/action/boycott-rush
