Channeling Reagan for 2012: Palin Wants a Photo-Op with Margaret Thatcher

Last updated on August 10th, 2014 at 05:01 pm

Wrong PM, Sarah!!!!

If you still don’t believe that Sarah Palin is running for president in 2012 it is being reported that Palin will soon be visiting Britain and has requested a photo op with Margaret Thatcher as, “as part of a bid to enhance her claim to be the ‘heir to Ronald Reagan.” Palin has not requested a meeting with current Prime Minister David Cameron.

According to the Daily Mail, “Her representatives approached Margaret Thatcher to ask for a meeting as part of a bid to enhance her claim to be the ‘heir to Ronald Reagan’ and prepare to challenge Mr. Obama.” This is not a surprise, as Sarah Palin’s entire 2012 strategy appears to be based on convincing Republicans that she is Ronald Reagan reincarnate.”

What is interesting is that Sarah seems more interested in the photo op and the publicity than actually sitting down and talking policy with the recently elected Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron. The Daily Mail quoted an individual close to the talks about Palin’s visit as saying, “One individual involved in the talks about the visit said, “Palin’s people haven’t said anything about meeting Cameron. Their main interest is getting a picture of her with Lady Thatcher. I’m not sure they know who David Cameron is.”

Wow, that was pretty brutal, but it does beg the question, why would a potential presidential candidate go to Britain and take the time to meet with a piece of political nostalgia like Margaret Thatcher while bypassing the current leader of America’s biggest ally? These kinds of moves are providing hints that no one should be anticipating much substance from the Palin 2012 campaign. She is going to try to run a charismatic feel good campaign that leaves out any discussion of those pesky details like what she might do if she ever was elected.

She wants the photo op with Thatcher to use in her future advertising. Imagine an ad that shows video or a photo or Reagan meeting with Thatcher and then as a syrupy toned announcer talks about the beauty of America, the image on the screen morphs to Palin meeting with Thatcher. It is a bizarre political strategy to say the least. It may work with some Republicans, but even if she did win the nomination, she would not be able to compete with all the power and charisma of Obama. If run in a general election, her blast from the past ads would only ensure a landslide defeat for the GOP.
