For the right price Palin supports socialized medicine

Palin undermines her own position on healthcare reform

While Sarah Palin was off in Calgary delivering a speech for, presumably American dollars, she told the story about how as a youngster her family used to grow across the border to Canada for some of that socialized medical care. She didn’t bash the Canadian medical system. She played to the audience with her Canadian connection, proving once again that her political positions are malleable depending on who is signing the check.

According to the Calgary Herald, Palin told her audience that, “My first five years of life we spent in Skagway, Alaska, right there by Whitehorse. Believe it or not – this was in the ’60s – we used to hustle on over the border for health care that we would receive in Whitehorse. I remember my brother, he burned his ankle in some little kid accident thing and my parents had to put him on a train and rush him over to Whitehorse and I think, isn’t that kind of ironic now. Zooming over the border, getting health care from Canada.”

It is more than irony. It is hypocrisy. This is the same woman who spent all of last summer screaming about socialized medicine, and death panels, who now when paid a handsome fee, goes to Canada and tells a charming little story about how her family took advantage of the socialized Canadian healthcare system. Why oh why would Palin betray her values? For money, of course, Palin spoke to a gathering of 1,200 people with tickets priced at $150-$200 a pop.

Palin’s followers will continue to defend her, but to those of us who actually paying attention to what her true motives are, none of this is surprising. Sarah Palin is about the almighty dollar. She quit her job as governor of Alaska to chase her fortune, so why should anybody be surprised that she would contradict herself on healthcare if the price is right? Sarah Palin continues to flush whatever political future that she once had down the toilet with her shameless pursuit of fame and fortune.
