In an interview on Fox News, noted scholar and college dropout, Rush Limbaugh claimed that President Obama did not do his own work in law school, while hinting at race, “I think this is the first time in his life that there’s not a professor around to turn his C into an A or to write the law review article for him he can’t write.”
Here is the video courtesy of Think Progress:
Limbaugh said, “I think this is the first time in his life that there’s not a professor around to turn his C into an A or to write the law review article for him he can’t write. He’s totally exposed and there’s nobody to make it better. I think he’s been covered for all his life. The fact that his agenda failed this year is the best thing that could have happened to this country.”
Limbaugh is indulging in more racial stereotypes here. He is hinting that because Obama is black, others at Harvard Law School did the work for him. I am guessing that in Limbaugh’s mind there is no way that a black man could be that smart, so he is trying to portray Obama as some sort of Affirmative Action baby who made it to the White House.
Any critic of Obama who is in touch with reality will admit that the president is intelligent. It is deplorable of Limbaugh to attempt to belittle a man’s intelligence because of the color of his skin.
I am sure that Limbaugh’s defenders will claim that Rush wasn’t talking about race, but given the context of Limbaugh’s consistent forays into race based politics, his subtle message was clear. Rush and the rest of the right wing continue to try to tap into the dark subconscious of the American political psyche. This is a dangerous game to play in exchange for a few more seats in Congress.
