On his radio show today Glenn Beck brought back his Nazi fetish this time while talking about Obama’s decision to send more troops to Afghanistan. Beck said, “If we would have said, we are going to go into Normandy, then we are going train those French, Hitler would have laughed.”
Here is the audio from Media Matters:
While talking about the decision to increase troops in Afghanistan, Beck said, “It is in our vital national interest to win…Try this for size, we’re not doing this, but this doesn’t even make sense. Imagine if Eisenhower would have said, wow, you want me to land on the beaches, D-Day. Alright, I’m going to need everything we got, and the president comes out and says it’s in our vital national interest that we give it, well not everything we got, we’re going to send a few more people over, but then we’re coming home.”
This led to the inevitable Nazi comparison, “Do you think the Nazis would have fought so hard on Normandy? Do you think they would have said hold them, hold them, hold them? If we would have said, we are going to go into Normandy, then we are going train those French, Hitler would have laughed.”
First of all the Taliban aren’t the Nazis, and the United States is not fighting a world war. Beck and company completely omitted Obama’s qualifier on future troop withdrawals. Obama said that if conditions allow it the troops will start to be withdrawn in 18 months.
Beck wants the US to stay in Afghanistan forever. What kind of solution is that? At some point the US has to leave, and the Afghans have to take over. The point of this mission is to stabilize the country so that al-Qaeda doesn’t set up operations there again. Beck seems to have forgotten that al-Qaeda is the reason that the United States is there, not the Taliban.
