Limbaugh Attacks Olympia Snowe and the State of Maine for Supporting Healthcare Reform

Last updated on August 10th, 2014 at 05:07 pm

As soon as Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe voted in favor of the Senate Finance Committee’s healthcare reform proposal, it was a given that Rush Limbaugh would go on the attack. Limbaugh called Snowe a predictable joke, and then he attacked the state of Maine. He said that we ought to saw the state off and let it float out to sea.

Here is the audio of Limbaugh attacking Snowe:

Limbaugh said, “This is the same Republican Olympia Snowe who says the party left her, that she didn’t leave the Republican Party, that she is a fiscal conservative. Olympia Snowe is a predictable joke. She has voted for all of Obama’s big spending radical agenda. If the Republicans had any intelligence, not only would they vote no on the Baucus bill, they wouldn’t even show up for the vote. The Republicans have no business helping this thing get passed. The Republicans have no business, politically, I mean it’s death for them to have any role what so ever in this health care bill being passed.”

This wasn’t enough as Limbaugh also attacked the state of Maine:

Rush was discussing Maine with a caller when he said, “Look my brother this is why I have beseeching people to forget this moderate direction the Republican Party wants to go. It’s gonna take us right to the direction of Olympia Snowe…What she cares about every six years is voters in Maine, not voters in Florida…I’ll tell you what it’s time for Goldwater had it right, let’s just saw the state off and let it sail out to sea.”

It is not any sort of shock that Limbaugh would attack Olympia Snowe, because in his mind Republicans should march in lock step and toe the line that he establishes. What I find fascinating is the fact that he would attack an entire state. I am sure that he has, or maybe after today had, listeners in Maine. Apparently Rush doesn’t like democracy because he is upset that the people of Maine chose Olympia Snowe to represent them in the Senate.

It is also interesting that Limbaugh is trying to force the GOP back in the direction of Goldwater conservatism. The right wingers who are pushing this path seem to have completely forgotten how Barry Goldwater’s 1964 run turned out for them.

Barry Goldwater was defeated by Lyndon Johnson in one of the lopsided presidential elections in US history. Johnson won 44 states and the DC to Goldwater’s 6 states. President Johnson got 61% of the vote to Goldwater’s 38%. Johnson also piled up 486 electoral votes to Goldwater’s 52. The Republican Party has given way to rebirth of the radical right, which will likely have the same, or worse results, as 1964.
