In his column for D Magazine CBS Golf Analyst David Feherty made the outrageous claim that the troops all love George W. Bush to the point where if a solider had two bullets and was in an elevator with Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and Bin Laden, the soldier would shoot Pelosi twice.
Feherty wrote, “From my own experience visiting the troops in the Middle East, I can tell you this, though: despite how the conflict has been portrayed by our glorious media, if you gave any U.S. soldier a gun with two bullets in it, and he found himself in an elevator with Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and Osama bin Laden, there’s a good chance that Nancy Pelosi would get shot twice, and Harry Reid and bin Laden would be strangled to death. I’ve never met a soldier who didn’t love this president and this country, and I’ve met a bunch of them, at home and abroad, in hospitals and in theater.”
I have no problem with a person expressing their political opinions, but Faherty doesn’t speak for all the troops. If the troops love Bush so much, how did Obama out raise John McCain by a 6 to 1 margin? Faherty completely ignores the fact that Obama got 44% of the military vote in 2008. The fact that 44% of our troops did not support the GOP is strong evidence that the troops didn’t all love George W. Bush.
It is wrong for anybody to claim to speak for an entire group of people, and I think Mr. Faherty needs to meet more service people, especially those who have come home from war. I find it disgusting that he would assume that a person who serves their country would commit a crime against their own nation. It is insulting to every person who serves or has served. It is disgusting. There really is no other word. It would be just as disgusting if he said that a Republican would be shot. It would still be wrong.
I guess this is the point where I am supposed to call for David Feherty to be fired. Well, that’s up to CBS. The fact that he didn’t express these opinions while on the clock for the network, likely means that he won’t be disciplined, and I am not certain that he should be, but if there is enough viewer backlash over this, he will be gone. In reality, the decision is yours. If you want Feherty fired, take your protests to CBS. I will say this. His columns are nothing but a gigantic George W. Bush man crush, so his opinions aren’t exactly credible.
