Today, in his “Twitterview” with George Stephanopoulos Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) refused to defend his daughter Megan in her feud with Laura Ingraham over Ingraham calling his daughter fat. Thus, McCain exhibits more father of the year type behavior.
Stephanopoulos ask McCain about his daughter and Ingraham, and here is what McCain said, “I’m proud of my daughter and she has a right to her opinions, like any family we agree on some things and disagree on others.” Wow, what a completely wimpy answer. If he didn’t want to jump into the feud, he could have given the same answer, but also added something about loving his daughter, and her weight not having anything to do with the discussion.
Megan McCain is 24 years old, so no one should be expecting her father to fight her battles for her, but to give such a politically neutral answer, illustrates what a soul less dead fish of a man John McCain really is. He gave that same answer almost word for word last year on the campaign trail when discussing Sarah Palin. This also shows that McCain the maverick was a myth, when push comes to shove Sen. McCain will always retreat and avoid conflict. This is not the kind of man who would have been a good leader for the nation.
I do understand the value of having tough, independent children who can survive on their own, but what kind of father would be ok with his daughter being called fat in the media? The problem isn’t that McCain didn’t want to get involved in this spat. He is a U.S. Senator and getting involved would have blown this thing up like adding gas to a fire, but I don’t know many parents who wouldn’t even go as far as expressing his love for his daughter in this situation.
Megan McCain already has shown that she is more than capable of handling herself, but a little support from her old man might have been nice. Republicans cried foul about media profiles that painted McCain as a cold, emotionally distant man with a temper, but all his comments today did was reinforce that perception. If McCain doesn’t have the political courage to address an issue with a talk show host, then how would he have had the courage to make the tough decisions as president?
