Four Democratic Senators turned up the shutdown pressure on Trump by inviting him to meet with workers who are either currently laid off or working without pay.

Sens. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Ben Cardin (D-MD), Tim Kaine (D-VA), and Mark Warner (D-VA) wrote in a letter to Trump:

As the White House rages, because Democrats won’t give Trump a lunch photo-op, the Senators turned up the heat on the president by writing, “When asked about the situation facing federal workers, you said, “I can relate. I’m sure the people that are on the receiving end will make adjustments. They always do.†Some federal workers – like millions of Americans – live paycheck-to-paycheck. According to the Federal Reserve, 40% of Americans cannot pull together $400 for an emergency, without going into debt or selling something. Speaking with some of the workers who cannot afford to miss a paycheck may help you better relate to the adjustments you expect them to make for your shutdown.”

Democrats Reinforced That Trump Is Out Of Touch

The message behind the Senators’ offer is that Trump doesn’t care about the federal workers who his shutdown is harming. Trump doesn’t want to hear stories about how people can’t afford food, medicine, or to keep a roof over their heads. Trump thinks that he is winning the shutdown with tweets and lunches, but the Democratic message is that there are no winners. There are only losers and the number of people who are being hurt by Trump‘s shutdown is growing each day.
