Democrats Demand Information From White House on Scope of FBI Probe

On Sunday night Senator Diane Feinstein used her influential position as ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee to go after White House Counsel Don McGahn.

McGahn is an old crony of Brett Kavanaugh, and is generally considered to be protecting him and doing everything possible to get him onto the Supreme Court.

With all of the confusion and misinformation surrounding the scope of the FBI investigation Senator Feinstein decided to go straight to McGahn to find out what is really going on.

So last night she sent a letter to Don McGahn with a copy to FBI Director Christopher Wray.

In the letter she demanded that she receive a copy of the written directive that the White House gave the FBI with regard to the Kavanaugh investigation. If Democrats can get a copy of this directive it will clear up the confusion and also allow them to properly assess whether the FBI probe has been done properly.

Feinstein does not have the power to subpoena information but her letter should get the attention of the White House and the FBI Director.

McGahn might decide to simply ignore Feinstein’s letter but Wray probably won’t. He might turn the letter over to Feinstein for the sake of propriety and because it’s the right thing to do.

In the letter Feinstein wrote:

“Given the seriousness of the allegations before the Senate, I am writing to request that you provide the Senate Judiciary Committee with a copy of the written directive by the White House to the FBI.”

She also asked the FBI to release the names of additional witnesses or evidence that is part of the investigation if agents are able to expand the original scope.

Although Donald Trump tweeted that the FBI had free rein in the scope of their investigation, NBC News reported that was not true. In such a case the explanation for the discrepancy would be this: Don McGahn could have ordered a limited scope FBI probe and not even told the president about it. He appears to be willing to do anything to get Kavanaugh confirmed, no matter how improper or unethical.

Deborah Ramirez, the second woman to come forward with accusations against Kavanaugh, has reportedly spoken with the FBI as part of the additional investigation and has given them names of more witnesses.

The third woman, Julie Swetnick, said that Kavanaugh drugged her with “Quaaludes or something similar” and attacked her in a “gang rape.”

Neither Swetnick nor Dr. Christine Ford have been contacted by the FBI in their supplemental Kavanaugh probe. Some people have said that the FBI might finish its work today. If they finish without interviewing either Ford or Swetnick, it will expose the FBI investigation as a total sham.

No matter what happens, it’s clear that Don McGahn, with the tacit blessing of Donald Trump, is stonewalling the FBI probe that was requested by the Senate Judiciary Committee. What’s also clear is that Diane Feinstein does not plan to let him get away with it.

The truth will come out this week, thanks to Feinstein. She may or may not  be able to prove that the FBI probe is a farce. But she will definitely prove that Republicans don’t care about women and are willing to force Kavanaugh onto the Supreme Court even if it leads to a disaster in the midterm elections, which it probably will.
