Trump Surveyed Members of His Mar-a-Lago Golf Club on Supporting Gun Control

Trump spent this past weekend at his Mar-a-Lago golf club — where he’s spent over 50 days of his presidency so far — watching television, going on Twitter rants, and fuming about the ongoing Russia investigation.

According to The Washington Post, he also took time out to survey members of the club on whether he should back efforts for stricter gun control. Given that Mar-a-Lago is an expensive private club for the wealthy, it’s not exactly the most diverse or least out-of-touch pool to poll.

Apparently, what compelled him to ask the club members what they thought on the subject was seeing numerous TV appearances survivors of last week’s shooting at a Florida high school were making. Not only have students of the school been calling out Trump and other Republicans for their empty platitudes and condolences, they’ve been demanding action and have announced a nationwide march for gun control planned for March 24.

“People keep asking us, ‘What about the Stoneman Douglas shooting is going to be different, because this has happened before and change hasn’t come?’” said 11th-grade student Cameron Kasky on ABC’s This Week. “This is it.People are saying that it’s not time to talk about gun control. And we can respect that. Here’s a time. March 24th in every single city. We are going to be marching together as students begging for our lives.”

The way this shooting’s survivors have taken control of the post-tragedy narrative definitely seems to be prompting a real push for change that can’t be ignored as would usually happen. Whether or not Trump’s golf crowd thinks he should push gun control will ultimately be irrelevant once this newly energized movement proves it won’t quiet down once the shock of the latest shooting wears off.
